Finchtastic 50 Posted March 6, 2015 Am I the only one who thinks crafting materials should be much more common? For example, I can be a fresh spawn and find a backpack and a gun with ammo, well before I find an axe to cut sticks, rope and burlap sack to make bag, and tree + more rope for bow and arrow... When crafting items are harder to obtain than regular items, crafting then becomes completely pointless... Also, I don't want to hear anything about how the whole game should be crafting and hunting animals, that's not what I'm saying. This is ZOMBIE SURVIVAL, not a Bear Grylls Simulator 2015. That would just ruin the game.
hekp 223 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) You can craft a stone knife (or find a steak knife, hunting knife, combat knife?, small axe, fireaxe, machette, kitchen knife, hatchet, that butchers axe ..) which you can use to get an ashwood stick. You can use guts as a rope when crafting a bow aswell.Burlaps are in high demand due to ghillie suits, i dont believe they will buff their spawn rate. I don't really have a problem finding any of these items unless the place was stripped of its lootOnly thing that's missing is alternative item instead of matches. Another alternative for the rope would be great aswell. Edited March 6, 2015 by halp
Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted March 6, 2015 It's still very basic, there are a couple of leather working recipes and some basic elementary crafting but that's about it.People have mixed opinions about crafting though.I belong to the people that wish for a large variety and more crafting oriented gameplay. But others like you said yourself, only want a pretty basic "Bear Grylls" style crafting and more of a scavenging oriented gameplay. HarryPotter (DayZ) 172 Posted March 6, 2015 I think in the long run we might see different play styles represented on different servers. Like some will have tonnes of military gear and be a pvp fest and some will have only very basic civilian weapons and have very little pvp but lots of crating etc. Some might be just fists and knives etc and some will have everything.. I propose an alternative the burlap courier bag: Grocery bag. The grocery sack is the smallest wearable back-pack and will have only 4-6 slots. It won't be crafted, but will instead be searched for in garbage piles or trash bins, similar to the way sticks, rocks, and feathers are found. It would be extremely weak and offer 0 protections to items inside. To prevent the overpopulation of servers with junk grocery bags, they could make it so that when an empty grocery bag is dropped, it doesn't appear on the ground but instead just disappears. It wouldn't matter since you could easily search for a new one in nearby trash heaps. Edit: decided 4-6 slots was better than 6-8. I would rather feel a greater need to do a hardcore hunt for a better bag earlier than later. Edited March 6, 2015 by WolfgangErikson

WolfgangErikson 127 Posted March 6, 2015 Could you imagine the degradation factor?Yeah, I was thinking it would be good if they degraded to ruined from just walking around relatively quickly. Maybe 1 or 2 hours in game? I wasn't sure if that mechanic existed in game yet though, so I left it out.

I do, however, wish for there to be a better balance between lootable items and craftable items.
