WildCatNL 2 Posted July 1, 2012 I'm new to the DayZ mod, but I'm a big sucker for survival games, so once I heard about it and did a bit more searching about it on YouTube I was sold. I don't buy games often and didn't feel much for buying a game just for a mod in the making still in Alpha phase, but it was well worth the money. Anyway, I'm having a blast and love the tension and anxiety, or the simple thrill of having to be paranoid, scanning the horizon for both zombies but most of all other players.Compared to other players and there first time experience stories, I believe I've done pretty good so far. Sure, died several times, due to lack of understanding the game, but so far, I consider my self to be very lucky, the few players I've ran in to, where either friendly or didn't notice me. Have been shot at by other players and lived, never knew where the shot actually came from, nor did I wanted to go look, if I could I might have, but because I had a train of zombies chasing me down, my only option was RUN!.I eventually lost them after crossing a body of water, but also lost my gear. I lived, but no longer having a backpack really hurts. Now I like turn the thrill factor up a notch and shift from scavenging for survival and to putting some bullets in bandits. The hunted becomes the hunter ;)The thing is, I don't wish to go trigger happy and shoot on sight and kill every single player that crosses my path. Did some searching and people talk about hunting bandits like they can be identified, but I see little difference between one player and another. Might be equipped with different gear, but both look the exact same to me.Is there some game mechanic in place that marks them as bandit?

You shouldn't even bother with anyone. If you see someone, go in the other direction. If they see you, shoot them.

LIMITID 28 Posted July 2, 2012 Wait to you get decent gear and NVG then see how tense things can get in a shootout or entering a city. YOu spent 8 hrs geting all you equitment and you can loose it all at any moment and not even know who shot you:P
Orphen (DayZ) 14 Posted July 2, 2012 Look for a scoped weapon. Almost always shows that guy is a bandit.I've never met a friendly sniper. EVER.This guy is pretty spot on. Scoped weapons are for killing players. However, that leaves the following question: Is he a bandit or a bandit hunter?
Ampoliros 43 Posted July 2, 2012 If he's with a group that doesn't have scoped weapons, then probably a hunter. If they all have scoped weapons, bandits.
Orphen (DayZ) 14 Posted July 2, 2012 I suppose that's a legitimate point. Snipers can't see behind them and if you know all the good sniping spots...

Although if they have an .50 cal then almost certainly just out to PK. I'm a 'friendly' sniper at times. My group always has a designated marksman on high ground in overwatch calling out zeds and any suspicious movement. He isn't out to PK, just there to give us that force multiplier. Of course, if we do run into trouble, he will dispatch them quicksharp.
LastShenanigan 8 Posted July 2, 2012 Typically it comes down to behavior and movement. If you spot each other and you back off while they continue to move foward, assume hostile. However, there are always ignorant friendly players who'll run at any other player they see not realizing they're pointing their gun at you. It's really just something people need to learn not to do. If in an area that is free of zombies I'm not above firing a warning shot at a players feet in case they haven't noticed they're coming straight at me, sometimes if you aren't moving they simply didn't see you. Almost immediately they'll hit nearby cover and that typically gives you a chance to explain that you aren't hostile without it turning ugly or giving up your position. I've been shot by players while I hiding in long grass after they accidently stepped on me. Imagine it from their perspective, you're already prone and if you're looking at them then you're also pointing your gun at them. The only assumption they can come to in that split second is that you've been planning to kill them. I've received apologies when this has happend so it's really "shoot on sight" due to startling each other. As for spotting groups of players I've generally noticed those who are grouped and not carrying much are more friendly then those with nice guns and backpacks. Typically, established groups that are geared well aren't friendly to anyone and I can't really blame them. You're better off making friends on the forums first. If you encounter a lone survivor they're far less likely to outright open fire if you're in a group. Though this does open up your group to getting potshots taken at you by snipers. As for bandits...I don't think you can really define players as one thing or the other anymore, we're all survivors. The condition (and personality) a person is in when you bump into each other effects their actions towards you. "Bandits" are in my opinion the people who murder every person they come across. They are easy to spot in that you won't usually spot them. They almost always use sniper rilfes as most of the time they seem to care little about actually coming to collect your gear. I don't consider players who kill me because they're starving to death bandits... just willing to do whatever they need to survive. Avoiding players carrying scoped weapons is a good start. Moreso avoid being in positions where someone with a scoped weapon can take shots at you. Prone when you have objects to crawl around. when you're out in a field totally exposed somtimes it's better to run full speed across it until you hit the woods. It is much harder to hit a sprinting player with a sniper rifle then one crouched trying to sneak right out in the open.To sum it all up, I like your attiude and if I see you in game I'll be sure to lower my gun.
