[x-post from NewPlayers] Arma 2 Engine - Reality and common sense questions

Recommended Posts

First off' date=' you're in a post-soviet area; you really think a T-shirt and a vest will keep you warm? Look at the wiki and it reads (http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Chernarus) "Chernarus is a fictional post-Soviet country, accurately recreated from geographical data of real landscape". Temperatures would be FREEZING at night. You would NEED shelter, fire, food, water just to survive a single day.[/quote']Why oh why does everyone assume that a former Soviet Republic has to be cold? How cold do you think it gets in the fall in Turkmenistan? How about Georgia? Hell, you can even assume that Chernarus is modeled more after Russia, but that still doesn't mean it's inhospitable. European Russia and Siberia have different climates, which are again both different from the polar region.
The icons on the right side of your screen and the way to bring them to normal levels involve an IQ less than ten. Bandaging wounds and eating food is a simplistic and dumbed down system.
Rocket has mentioned that he would like to have a more subtle system to replace the HUD.
Arma 2's combat engine is a standardized joke compared to reality.
Software development requires tradeoffs. Maybe things had to be simplified in order to have a gorgeous, realistic 225 sq. km map.

However, I believe the ACE mod for ArmA 2 does incorporate wind. Whether it's possible to have wind effects for 50+ people all over the map, I don't know.

The game is still in Alpha, but the decision to run it on the engine of Arma 2 was very poor. What blows my mind away is Arma 2 came out in 2009 but runs WORSE than Counter Strike: Source.
Please show me the 225 sq. km maps in Counter Strike.
Hell, I bet the Skyrim engine could somehow run it better.
Yeah, it'd be so much better if building interiors were treated as as their own worlds, separate from the game map.
Mind you, throughout this entire discussion, I haven’t even mentioned graphics. I’ve seen games on Dreamcast that match Arma 2 by graphical standards.
Every time that I play DayZ I am struck by the simple beauty and attention to detail that ArmA 2 provides.

I agree with VossRG's post, the graphics are great and what really shines through this game is the detail on lighting from the sun etc.

"You think the gun simulation is bad? Try movement. People are moving like rocket ships while holding tons of equipment and weaponry on them. Seriously' date=' get off your computer chair and try running while holding a rifle. I guarantee you can't do it for long."

[/quote']

Don´t get me wrong mate, but there are actually people on this forum which are trained quiet welland we had to do marches with even more weight ( well if you´re carrying around vehicle parts in-game that´s really unrealistic but the rest) in the army. The problem isn´t the weight, it´s the water consumption I´d never could more than 1 or 2 km march with 60 kg or more with just 1 coke ( not even a bottle ), you ned to drink tons of water for those marches ( at the day ofc ).

from what I have heard' date=' Battlefield 3 (made by EA) provides a much different feel than COD. I have heard many reviews say it actually does feel like you are in a modern day battle. [/quote']

i heard that shit tastes good, mb you should try it?

from what i see:

you never played arma series.

you never played arma ACE mod.

you got shitty pc which poorly run arma and you have to run it on extreme low.

and you know, whole shit you throw here is quite hilarious.

Wind affect bullets even in vanilla arma 1, arma 2, tho ACE enhance it. so this is pretty much possible to do in dayz.

interface is customizable and moddable.

bullet counter can be disabled aswell as crosshair and other arcade options like waypoints, additional armor etc.

yeah, movement may be clunky but here goes @stmovement

for the fuck sake, play the game itself first then whine here. seriously. if you bought arma 2 co just for dayz thats your own fucking problem that you expected skyrim / bf / cod but got arma.

all this shit about movement speed is a nitpicking.

if you want complete realism go get ACE mod and stop this shitstorm.

3 pages is way too much for obvious troll.

The graphics are beyond disgusting.

I play on a GTX 580M w/ 16g of ram. Play Crisis 2 on Extreme settings or Skyrim on Ultra w/ HD 2k Textures and you will understand what good graphics are. The blocky aspects of Arma 2 may appeal to some but it's not even a step up from Half Life: 2's graphical engine. Your gun doesn't even move in your hand.

And yes, the water comment is very true. Being hydrated should be a huge concern.

it's just a game - of course there will never be a 100% simulator because that would be boring as shieeett. arma has that perfect balance of play ability and realism. OP you bring up a lot of valid points but clearly don't understand how things work from a technical standpoint - arma, and only arma, is capable of producing a game like this. all the other engines you mentioned don't even come close.

Is there a point to this thread?

Quoted for Truth. I sense the OP is simply trying to get shit stirred up.

OP, if the mod were in your hands, it would cost 49.99$, with upcoming DLC's named "DayZ: The NW Airfield" and "DayZ: The Encampment", with the first giving access to the NW Airfield and the second introducing tents, an extremely efficient way to hoard your items.

You would sell High-End gear, weapons and items for 1.99$ each (get a permanent one for just 5.99$!), depending on whatever it was, the game would be ported to consoles from the start, automatically limiting the game's potential.

Whatever you wanted on the game would be there, but only 2 years from now or updated to fight the latest game releases, you would have a crappy payment and general support system, and you wouldn't care what the playerbase wanted or didn't want.

Thank god Rocket actually cares about the game itself being a good game than actually trying to milk money of gamers. A few more like him out there and the average game would have 20 times more quality that the current ones have.
