Several suggestions improving DayZ experience

Recommended Posts

Hello @all!

As a participant of DayZ SA alpha I feel a certain obligation to give impulses for the development of features I’d like to see in the future. I’m not that much into the current development status, so there will be some point already addressed or taken under consideration for implementation. Here are my thoughts on improvement of the game:

Enviromental:

Advanced weather:

Post-apocalyptic Chernarus should be a rough and scary place. Survival in the wilderness shouldn’t be a walk on the beach. Nowadays Chernarus’ nature is mostly a sunny and comfortable place. There’s no need for clothing other than storing items and camouflage, you can survive with only a T-shirt on your skin in every situation.

I’d like the nature to be much rougher: add wind (at least acoustic feedback), more intense thunderstorms, cold days (and even colder nights) and some snow. The weather should have a direct impact on your character via the body temperature. If you are not equipped to withstand cold and rain you should have to take shelter to avoid hypothermia.

Other landscape:

I like to see Chernarus grow and explore the new areas. There are a lot of nice new cities within the common woodland terrain, which I’m sure took a lot of work. But instead of adding more of the same and more cities, I’d like to see a more diversified landscape. Mountains would fit well in the setting of the game and should have a different climate (see previous point). Limited trespass via paths could also introduce a nice new PvP aspect. Other landscape would add more variety to the gameplay.

Forest:

Until now the forest mostly consist of high trees and little things of interest in between. It doesn’t feel alive; I suggest adding some undergrowth/bushes for a realistic forest and a few things of interests (e.g. natural resources for crafting, small cabins etc.).

Character:

Temperature:

Today the only practical impact of your body temperature is overheating. Overheating should occur if you are on the move with a lot of clothes and heavy equipment. But you should be able to cool down much faster when resting. Nowadays I need to take a bath for several minutes to do that, which is as much annoying as the fact that I can’t enjoy a fire in proximity because I overheat in a matter of seconds. In harsh climatic conditions hypothermia should play a larger role (see previous point). As of now, if you are on the move (which is most of the time) you can’t become cool.

Resting:

Since DayZ is a survival game with a detailed simulation of human needs I’d like to see some game mechanics introducing stamina/rest level. Rest/sleep is a fundamental human need like eating or drinking. It’s immersion breaking to be able to sprint through Chernarus without the need for rest. I suggest implementing resting/sleeping e.g. in tents or just by lying/sitting. Of course not in real time but a noticeable amount. The advantages of a well-rested character could be more stamina and faster regeneration.

Gear:

Weight system:

The weight of items should have an impact on the characters ability to move and the energy/water consumption. A backpack full of weapons and ammunition should be a penalty over light gear. The players would have to spend more thoughts on the necessity of items. Collecting tons of garbage should be a penalty.

Carrying weapons:

I personally hate to be unable to carry a second primary weapon. A second (non sawed-off) weapon could be easily attached to a decent backpack if you have one. Not beinmg able to do so is immersion breaking.

Switching weapons on the move/eating/compass:

Pretty obvious, you shouldn’t have to stop walking for switching your weapons (happens sometimes). Eating on the move (walking, not sprinting) would be nice.
Simplify the usage of the compass! I would prefer the Arma mechanics. No one needs both hands and aim to take a short look on the compass! Coordinated fighting would be much easier.

Grab items:
I’d like to grab items on the floor and carry them in my hands. Would be a practically thing to do with weapons, backpacks (killed friend e.g.) or fuel cans. If you equip your weapon items should drop.

Balancing:

PvE vs. PvP:

I know this is work in progress, especially the numbers and behavior of zeds. My thoughts anymay:

In my opinion the balance in DayZ is way too much on the PvP side today. A soon as you acquired a basic melee weapon (axe, hammer, hoe) zeds are no more real danger to you. Since there’s no more (fighting) challenge after that most players directly become more PvP orientated. Guns aren’t necessary to fight zeds, just for killing players. This lack of PvE challenges leads to excessive PvP. Most encounters result in your death if you decide not shoot on sight. Thus even friendly players are forced into the KoS-behaviour.
PvP is of course vital for the game and the KoS-bandit is as much part of it as zeds, but in the great picture survivors are too hostile. In the real world normal people would hesitate to pull the trigger and kill a human being. I’d like to see that players don’t shoot each other right away and have sort of a ”team spirit” as survivors. Grouping up with others should not only help you in PvP situations but also increase your chances of surviving without PvP involvement.

Other:

A key to toggle running would be nice!

Please leave a comment, I'd like the feedback. Hope that helps to improve the game, keep up the good work!

there already is a key to toggle running. I can run through a 1000 meter field without touching my keyboard.

Loved the idea's of the environment! Exactly the same as my thoughts, the environment should be diffucult to survive in, not as easy as it currently is! Just wanted to clear up a few points in the gear section!

Weight System

The devs are making a stamina / weight system!

Carrying weapons

You can carry a second primary weapon, if you have your main primary on your back then you can carry another in your hands, it means you have to drop it if you want to do anything so it is a pain, but it is possible!

Switching weapons on the move

You only stop to switch weapons when you aren't sprinting, so if you want to switch to your axe to kill a zed silently, double tap W and then press your hotkey, your character will start to jog while switching and then sprint when the axe is out!

Loved all the idea's though! I dream of a harsh Chernarus where dying from the elements is more common!

Grab Items

You can! If all your inventory space is full then scroll wheel on the item and it will allow you to pick it up!

Lets just see how many Zeds we´ll get in the end. If there are a hundred of them in Elektro, I bet some ppl will start work together

The perksystem also sounds very interesting, when players have to spend some days to gain their perks, they would cherish their life more and stop firefighting for the joy

I could also imagine much smaller backpacks would may help. If you aren't able to carry medics/ammo/food/tools all by yourself, you may also start bonding together

Weather going rough sounds pretty cool maybe something for the hardcore servers?

Switching weapons on the move/eating/compass       -> yes

Grab items -> that's actually working right now. try to right click them

Thanks, hope others feel the same way ;)

I tried that (scrolling), but didn't seem to work then. I'll try again, maybe it was just a little bug there. I'll also try right clicking them.

You only stop to switch weapons when you aren't sprinting, so if you want to switch to your axe to kill a zed silently, double tap W and then press your hotkey, your character will start to jog while switching and then sprint when the axe is out!

If I'm not sprinting and press the hotkey to equip something I should be able to start moving during the animation. I don't get why you have to sprint to do that. Being a sitting duck like this is kind of annoying.

Are there any plans for the game implementing NPCs/bots in the vanilla game? I also liked to play DayZ Epoch with random mission and hostile bots.
