What is Prion disease?

It's basically a degenerative neurological disorder that is based on prions, or misfolded proteins. Since the disease is transmitted through these misfolded proteins and not a virus/bacteria, the disease can be transmitted through cooked meat (in reality anyway). In the game I think you have to eat raw meat but I'm not positive.

 

Mad cow disease is probably the most well known of prion diseases.

Exactly this. There are theory's about prion diseases passed from cannibalism, though I have not heard of any science to back it. Being as there is no treatment or cure for prion based disease.

 

They think there may be a link to Alzheimers as well, but we still dont understand them very well.

It seems you can also obtain this disease by getting hit by zombies. Played with a character today, with whom I haven't played in a month or so, and after a few hours he started laughing and crying randomly. With him I haven't had ANY meat whatsoever, he's consumed only canned goods. But today I got hit by zombies a few times and once I had to bandage. Some time after that the laughter begun. So it's not only cannibalism or a bug occurred.
