since we all love a bit of realism I hope rocket will consider something I have yet to see in any game. Add earplugs.

Just like in RL if you fire your weapon without hearing protection you will be left deaf for a moment with ringing in your ears. over time your hearing range will degrade, and take longer to recover.

there could be several kinds of hearing protection too.

Earplugs, most common.

Headphone style ear covers, can put on and off faster then plugs.

less common.

and digital noise cancelling that don't block normal sounds. rare

This would just be an irritating addition to the game, same with all the "make players have to urinate, sleep, etc." suggestions.
