Making the holster viable

Recommended Posts

So, as we all know the Chest Holster is a very cool item. It looks good, allows you to store a handgun and makes you draw/store the weapon much more quickly. However, it's not too viable in a long-term survival situation as it can be replaced with a vest which has more inventory space. So, it's a "transition" item, between the naked freshspawn and the grizzled veteran.

My suggestion is twofold, one requires more work but a better payoff and the other one is a "quickfix".

a) Changing the way the holster works. Currently it's a clothing item with inventory space for handguns. By making it an attachment for clothing you can have two versions, the chest holster (100% of current speed) and the leg holster (50% of current holster speed, still faster than backpack drawing). However, this would require changing the way it basically works and making clothing something that works with attachments.

b) Making the holster a visible item with reduced inventory space. So that the holster takes 2 inventory space, but can store a pistol within. Then, you can store it on your pants/coat and have a usable item. However, this would require the "current" method to still be viable.

Both of these obviously imply the addition of a standard belt/leg holster model.

Another idea I wrote here was based on an existing suggestion that different clothing items as should have different access speeds. Then the obvious benefit of a holster would be a very fast access speed - which is its benefit in real life.

A second one is coupled with a weight system (which is confirmed) - a holster would allow you to carry a pistol in an additional slot at lower weight than a vest reducing disadvantages (somewhat mitigated by the magic rifle slort though). And of course a holster helps to prevent overheating (not a factor right now but maybe later).
