How to get rid of server hoping, farming and empty servers in five simple steps.

Recommended Posts

1: Streamline servers rules.

Either expert, veteran or regular with fixed option such as no crosshair and third person disabled, whatever rocket decide fit the mod.

2: Restrict server per timezone.

People from russia can't join an american server anymore and vice versa.

3: Create a queue/unlocking list for servers.

See point 4.

4: Lock empty server.

Server will only unlock if the first 5 server in your timezone have reached 3/4 full capacity.

5: Profit.

From a technical stand point this is probably really though to do. But it is very similar to what MMO are doing these days, minus server locking/unlocking.

The goal is to ''force'' people to play with other people. No more server hopping to avoid people if the only server you can hop to are also almost full, at least, it will be a lot harder to ''ghost'' your way behind a player. No more empty server farming to gain an edge over other people in combat because now all the server are almost full or full and usualy constested zone will still be contested.

Also, no more night dodging because now people, just like reality, have to play in their timezone.

Of course, I would see that kind of system implimented after we have a decent logout timer to keep people from disconnecting to avoid death.

Tell me what you think, and flame me away for suggesting something so restrictive.

Thanks for reading.

1. How does this prevent any of that?

2. Refer to 1.

3. Why?

4. Refer to 3.

5. How?

This only accomplishes restricting players, as you yourself said.

Anyone who doesn't want to see empty servers can filter it out.

So if I want to join a smaller population server, both the server owner and myself are screwed?

My brain feels like it was just fracked by an oil drill for trying to wrap itself around this idea and how it relates to anything it's claimed to be related to.

+ 1 from me man, anything to stop the "farm, log and swap" it gets reddiculas at times, some limit of swapping servers and log out timer is critical addition to dayz, currently its either exploit or be killed by exploiters... :(

Always have to explain everything....

1: You can't force people to join veteran server if they play on regular server and vice versa, if servers have to to locked and unlocked depending on the population they must have the same rules to ensure the same kind of gameplay for everybody.

2: Because night servers are almost always empty and only played by few ignorant players or server hoppers/farmers with nightvision.

3: Because its the core of this system.

4: Because its the core of this system.

5: You profit by playing on regulated servers with streamlined rules and fair environement for everybody while stopping people from farming empty servers or hopping around.

The whole point is to stop people from joining empty server, of course if you want to join empty servers you wont be able to... why would you want to anyway unless you are one of those farmers/server hoppers?

1. Hardcoded server rules set by difficulty would be nice. Then you would know what your getting when you join a server, as opposed to the "Charlie Foxtrot" of different server settings that are currently being employed.

2. Don't restrict by 'timezone', restrict by region, if at all. Some of us are only able to play during evening and night time hours due to obligations with work and family. Why should we be punished for having a job, wife, and kids to take care of?

3. Taking away a players choice on what server they want to join based on the population level is just silly, I'll leave it at that.

1: Indeed

2: Good idea actually, but people will have to join night time servers anyway if they want to unlock more servers, because if the first 5 servers are not 3/4 full, others server wont open up. So it doesn't really matter anyway if we change it to region or timezone, either will acheive the same goal.

3: Your point?

My point is, if I want to join a server with my friends/co-workers (12 of us at any given time) this seriously limits our ability to get into the same server together. Servers should NEVER be locked due to population levels.

If a server is empty, anyone should be able to join it, at ANY time.

Aside from that, how is it decide which servers are opened next? Ones in Chicago? Texas? California? New York? Then your forcing players to join servers with higher pings, which can lead to lag issues for everyone else on the server.

Nope, because you are restricted by timezone, did you forget?

Full servers aren't locked, empty servers are locked until others server are at least 3/4 full.

No, you should not be able to join an empty server. Especialy if your intentions are to farm safely.

I live in the midwest, my ping to Chicago/Texas is better than my ping to New York, Cali, Portland. If your forcing me to join servers in the coasts because they aren't 'full' instead of allowing me to join servers closer to me, regardless of their population, then your degrading my experience, and the experience of others unjustly.

Server admins can already boot for high pings, which means they can currently restrict by region if they are actively & properly administrating the server.

Some servers also run on hardware that suffers from performance issues when they are 'FULL', hopefully this gets fixed with 1.7.2 and later releases. We should never be dictating what servers a player is allowed to play on based on population levels. We should however discourage & restrict server hopping/farming, but I don't think your solution to the problem works.

ZDB's idea is a much better plan for resolution to the "epedimic", as he puts it.

i can only agree with point 1 , a universal difficulty would be better preventing players on one server from having it easier than others.

This is a bad idea for multiple reasons....

Locking timezones is a bad idea....Most players leave when it turns night on their main server as the games flashlight mechanic is cumbersome and perma death for running into a zombie you couldn't see in pitch black is not very interesting to most players I defy you to find a full server of 50 plus players when it is pitch black on that server.

Also just because a server is in your time zone doesn't make it the best server for you. I live in Cali. My assumed best server is one of the LA servers I get a miniscule 15 ping on those, problem is I have twice died to hackers on LA8 when I had leet gear so I refuse to play on the best option and instead play in seattle or chicago, atlanta or new york especially at night when I want to play in day conditions.

Also night is not locked to the time of day in the time zone of the servers you will find servers that have day conditions even when it is night in your time zone most people depend on this for multiple reasons, if you only play when you get off work and it is always night wouldn't it be nice to play during the day once in a while? of course. Thats why it exists that way, limiting peoples choice is a bad call.

The game should not limit peoples options of where they can play and with what friends they can play with ....friend in NY too bad differnt time zone guess you can never play together again...

Clan live in the midwest predominetly guess you better find a new one.... bad idea , just bad.

You're right, this would get rid of server hopping. And it would never happen as long as servers are paid for by the consumer. Would you pay for a 50 slot server that sits on the bottom of the list?

I understand why you want to restrict the timezone, but there are people that play the game at night because they have to work during the day. Part of being able to switch timezones is you change the experience the player gets. If you always play at night, it becomes stale and boring.

As it is right now I don't believe the difficulty setting does anything or has anything to do with CH/3rd/DM being on. I think those are separate settings you can adjust as you see fit. Don't really understand why you want to "streamline the rules". They already are.

P.S. - Some people like playing at night. Just because they enjoy it that doesn't make them ignorant or a server hopper/farmer.

NO!

It would prevent me from playing with my american friends, which would just kill the game for me.

The game is more fun with friends, atleast for me and since most of them live in America, while im in Europe would just kill the game for me.

1) Wot

2) You're fucking joking right? I live in Australia and there are like 15-20 servers that are ALWAYS full, not only that they are all unstable and lag like a bitch. Think about others, not everyone lives in bloody 'MERICA (yes Im assuming you live in the US)

3) Im not exactly sure what you mean by this

4) You should have swapped this and #3 around. Why would you refer to something later on in your post.

5) -1232141239832423 loss in profit.

If I couldn't play on servers from a different time zone, I probably wouldn't play at all due to not being able to play until the evening.
