Like every single MMO out there, the pve challenge will only last until you learn how to deal with it. Avoiding death from the elements will only last so long. Once you figure out how to not die from zombies/disease it will only come down to whether or not a player will kill you.

Pretty dead one.  A PvE world will quickly become static and easy to deal with once players learn it's "rules".  The true wild card is going to be interaction with other players, we are the truly difficult part in any PvP enabled game.

When the loot gets rare... And you get hungry... You will know survival.

You act like the choice is between having a gun or having food.  Not to mention someone with a gun could just take your food...  I seriously doubt loot is going to become rare enough that this even becomes a problem and if it does, banditry would go thru the roof.

Here's the thing, you make PvE somewhat of a challenge then throw PvP on top, that PvE now becomes more of a challenge.

Or that someone may actually have to work with you to get food?  I know, mind blowing.
