Personal GPS and player stashes

Recommended Posts

Yet another idea I've thought of while playing a bit of STALKER earlier today.

Currently, a GPS allows you to mark locations on the map. However, when you do so, everyone with a GPS can instantly see the locations you've marked just by opening their maps.

The suggestion itself is this: If possible, edit the way a GPS works so we can mark locations on our GPS without other players instantly viewing it, and if we die and another player loots our corpse, they get all the locations we've marked on our GPS transferred to theirs (or they'll loot our GPS if they didn't had one).

My suggestion goes hand in hand with the idea of stashing loot in places (similar to tents, but possibly better hidden, like in a backpack or somesuch), such as these ones:

http://dayzmod.com/forum/search.php?action=results&sid=8e5d1af409bc808be7434fff253af987&sortby=lastpost&order=desc

Before you state "Tents are stashes", the problem with tents is that they're quite visible, and although they serve as very good stashes with a ridiculous capacity at the moment, I personally feel that they're too obvious, and could serve better purposes than just to store things in.

Stashing things in backpacks would be the best option imho, as a backpack is small enough as to be easy to hide, but also restricted in size so we can't hide 10 guns inside of it like we can Tents.

Let's discuss!

Well, first of all you should know how the GPS markings are working in normal ARMA.

If someone sees a marking or not depends on which CHAT channel you are when you place the marking.

Global - Everyone (removed in newer dayz versions)

Side - Everyone on the same side (removed in newer dayz versions)

Group - only your squad / group (no one in dayz or only squads with xml files)

Vehicle - only people in the same vehicle

Direct - everyone near you (40m in beta versions)

In DayZ you can use group chat to get your markers private. (as far as it should be in norma ArmA)

Now the map copy thing. Also that is already possible with other mods in ARMA like ACE. But its a cool idea :)

...In all my time playing ARMA 2 I never realised that. Holy shit. I also never realised it was removed in the newer versions, did the changelogs state it and I simply missed it? (I read the changelogs every time)

But yes, ACE has refused to share their assets with DayZ, so it'd have to be re-coded specifically for DayZ.

As far as I know the new beta versions allow the server to shutdown channels. Its what rocket always wanted. And im glad he did :P

Anyone in Elektro/Cherno?

The stashes are still a point for discussion, as is the idea of the transferring maps; Do others agree with the idea? Do you disagree? Why?

I'd like to hear other opinions :D

I love the idea of a quick way to stash loot that isn't OP like tents. Either that or decreasing tents size and being able to find camo tents or something. But a backpack as a quicker fix.

And I LOVE the idea of map transfers. I hate putting markers on my map and then everyone rushing to where I put it. It sucks! Having a private way to view my own markers is a good way to do it. I also can't wait to see people come up with their own codex for marking the spots they actually want to remember and then a ton of dummy spots :D

Is there a thread where the ACE team states their intentions in this regard, besides one from XenoACE?

As far as I know, XenoACE isn't on the development team. I see his name mentioned only as a maker of maps.

Valid point. We should get some more official information about this event, then, although let's get back on topic eh?

I think people will get around this if it were implemented - when I realised people might be able to see my map locations, I just noted the grid references on paper rather than use the in-game map.

It makes sense intuitively, it's just one of those things that we can't prevent people from getting around.

+1 Tents do stand out way too much. Hiding backpacks would be more reasonable anyway. They are personal items, not holding a significant quantity of items, but could still be valuable. I would much rather throw my backpack down in a forest (which blends in nicely with the ground) vice placing a giant bright green and yellow tent which can be seen from 1000m away. You can do this now, but it is a giant PITA to find the pack after you drop it. Being able to mark it on a gps would help that problem.

GPS need something anyways. They are essentially micro-computers that able able to transmit and receive satellite information. Every GPS I have used has all kinds of features. The ones we get in game seem pretty stale, even though they are still very useful, especially if you don't know the map very well.

You've rekindled my hope for GPS systems having a use beyond giving a player their co-ordinates, Zipper. Currently, I find maps and GPS to be useless, as http://dayzmap.info gives me more info than anything in-game.

Check managers.

(Sorry for off topic).

Xeno

Thanks Xeno. I'm sorry for off-topic too. I was just hoping you were a crazy person that had no authority over ACE, and that the devs would come into the forums and say "we see this nice project you have here, want some ACE with that?"
