Hardcore and experimental question

I am not a new player but I have a newb question I haven't gotten a clear answer on and couldn't find. I have never played on hardcore or experimental servers, I heard someone say you get a new character when you play on these servers.

My question is what happens to your stable character when you play on either of these servers? Is that character saved? Could I essentially have three characters or does it wipe me every time I start a new character?

Can I try the experimental and then hop back over to my normal set up after I try it?

you can have 4 toons, one on reg and hardcore on stable, and two on exp one reg and 1 hardcore

Thank you! I have been wanting to try EXP for a while but was waiting between lives to start one.

So just tried to log into the EXP servers and keep getting "Bad version, server rejected connection," I posted about in the Exp thread. 

 

Also, I tried a hardcore server and it loaded my regular character, all the gear. I don't get it... *shame*

Ah, good. You'll have to remove the patch again to play on regular servers from what I know, though.
