Disconnecting Immediately After Spawning To Avoid Imminent Death

Recommended Posts

How does the DayZ community and the DayZ developers respond to the following situation?

A player does everything right and logs off in as safe a location as can be found. Later (5 minutes to 5 days/same server or different) they log in only to discover that an imminent threat (e.g. a group of players or a vehicle has detected the player spawning in and are moving in for the kill). Let's assume that had the player been in game the whole time, it's they could have moved to avoid the encounter.

Question 1: Is disconnecting immediately after logging in under these circumstances considered a cheat on par with DC'ing under fire?

Question 2: Given that a proposed 15 second, 30 second, 1 minute disconnect freeze will very likely result in the player's, is this an acceptable price to pay to address DC'ers?

Question 3: Should we/can we start the disconnect freeze counter after, say, 10 seconds of being on a server? Enough time to look around, but not enough time to loot or take offensive action.

Question 4: What if a player logs into a server where the framerate was so bad (8fps or less) that it's completely unplayable that they had to disconnect right away, within the 10 second window. Should players be forced to expose themselves during a disconnect countdown for a game based performance issue like that?

I'm looking for the community's view on the right balance between establishing penalties to fight DC'ing and server hopping while at the same time trying to not overly punish players for the limitations of game mechanics or system performance.

No flames please, there's more than enough of those threads. Just constructive feedback/criticism please.

I would say yes, it's a cheat. You chose that server and that moment in time to log in so you should live (or die) with the consequences.

Question 2: Given that a proposed 15 second, 30 second, 1 minute disconnect freeze will very likely result in the player's, is this an acceptable price to pay to address DC'ers?

Perfectly acceptable.

No. this would kinda negate the point of having a disconnect freeze in the first place.

Question 4: What if a player logs into a server where the framerate was so bad (8fps or less) that it's completely unplayable that they had to disconnect right away, within the 10 second window. Yes, choose a server you've played on before and that you know you get good results from. If you're one of those that just picks a random server then make sure that you and the server you're about to join are both running the latest Beta version and the latest release of DayZ. If you're all singing from the same hymn sheet, you're less likely to get some quirky FPS issue.

No flames intended here but if you DC to avoid death or injury for any reason then quite frankly you are cheating and deserve to be spanked in some fashion for it. The only exceptions I can think of right now are DC'ing due to quirky FPS issues, there isn't really much you can do there but DC and try another server. The other exception would be to DC to avoid a hacker, there's a recent thread here somewhere where the OP said he DC'ed to avoid getting blown up by a tank! In all fairness DC'ing to avoid a hacker sounds like a reasonable justification to me.
