Ok since the introduction of item crafting, my love for dayz was sparked again. No longer do I wander the map aimlessly, but with purpose, looking for items to craft.

I like how simple they have made it, but also not as simple as 7d2d or even the upcoming h1z1.

the bug where you break legs after drinking a kvass or fall of a small ledge has been solved by crafting, you can easily look for a stick in woods and have a very high chance to find one, coupled with a bandage, your legs are brand new.

However few items I'm having a real problem with, where the heck can I find an ashwood tree? I have seriously wandered half the map, and nothing. Same goes for rocks, they should be the easiest to find along sticks. I know you can mine them but now that I need that pick I can't find it, same goes for rope.

I really hope they introduce arrow crafting soon as well as inventory, a place to store my loot.

find a pick axe and use it with your mouse wheel on rock formations or rock textured environment to collect stones, some areas even offer stone picked by hand simply look down to the ground and hit F-Key

 

Another possibility to get the Ashwood Stick is to cut down certain trees. The trees you need to find are very round and green with branches almost reaching the ground. Its bark is white with a green hue to it. In order to cut it down, you'll need to use the "cut firewood" option when using a Firefighter's Axe or Splitting Axe. The tree will drop firewood and a single Ashwood Stick

And no, I haven't seen an ashwood tree either. Must be damn rare!

True, I even thought about server hopping in these sheds just to acquire a pick, but it would be cheating. These sheds also spawn stones needed for campfires, but apparently can also be used to sharpen knives

Yeah, you can find ashwood in barely all "industrial" buildings or "storage" buildings like those.

 

Did you try to cook some meat on a campfire or even more challenging, on a gas stove with the use of a cooking pot ?

 

I think that I'm gonna enjoy a nice and calm retirement in the woods of the NW corner once animals are more common and tents implemented.

 

Maybe I'll make the occasional trip to "the end of the line" or Bashnaya outpost to replace my tools and refill my water and canned food supplies.

 

 

BTW, we miss guitars, to play when sitting around the campfire with friends.

The Ashwood trees are pretty rare. I've seen one or two of them after looking around in the Berezino wooded areas, however.

Some areas seem to have a higher density of ashwood trees than others. Sometimes I can't seem to find any in my area, sometimes there's several.

The road coming south out of the NWAF that runs perpendicular into the road between vybor and kabanino.  That intersection is nothing but ashwood trees.  And a neat little drain pipe to crawl into during the rain and eat beans through apocalypse fueled tears of dismay.

 

As others have said pickaxe = stones, from any rock.  Neat trick if you don't know.  Build your fireplace kit.  Add up to 8 stones.  Place kit in inventory.  Add log to kit. 

Permanent fireplace. 

The stones will be on the kit allowing you to never need a pickaxe again.  Sometimes this is buggy and you have to remove the log to put the kit back into your bags, then add the log to the kit again, never really needing to acquire a log again either.  Once a log'ed, stoned, fireplace kit is in your bags, drag any cooked or uncooked meat into it for storage.  That all may seem obvious but I carried a pickaxe around for way longer than I should have.

Ashwood trees are most common along the coast - you'll see them along the traintracks there quite often.  Another place to go is if you go up to Novo - the clocktower there has a ton of ashwood trees just outside of it.  Like all the trees in that courtyard are ashwood.

I roam around the southern coast now that it is deserted and while I was walking outside of Cherno i cut down a random tree to make myself a campfire in the train car it turned out to be an ashwood tree and I had absolutely no idea, right along the train tracks and there were tons of the trees.

Are you sure they are ashwood, because there are other trees with white trunks, but unlike ashwood, these have black patches. Ashwood is all white trunk apparently. I have crossed the map, all the way to coast, still nothing. Nearly ran into two players, im surprised they didnt see me, i thought about sniping them to take my tally to 2 kills ha ha. But didnt want to ruin their gameplay, they werent a threat.

I also managed to find rope and an axe in the process.

there are about 5-6 ashwood trees in one bunch, and a good place to make a fire

 

you have cover to all sides and can chop down a tree so it covers almost the whole area with leafes

thanks for this, I cant wait for arrows either. Hope they reduce ammo spawning. At the moment im down to 8 bullets in my mosin, and 10 in my magnum. I could just easily loot military barracks, even server hop to get fully geared in matter of minutes, but I try and play a survival game.

You are right second one is much more common. I came across a crossbow, only to realise I would have to drop my mosin, which I just scored another 20 bullets. So I left the cross bow behind. Once I got my ash wood stick, and finally crafted a bow, it also can't be placed in a backpack, so I'm forced to carry it in my hands. I really hope storage of some sort is implemented.

On the other hand while looting one of the newer towns (the one with the soccer field), all the buildings were unlooted, I spotted a police station, doors also shut, I felt fairly safe, as I made it to the stairs, the doors flung open, I quickly retreated back. The player just peaked through and when back inside. For few minutes I stood there, deciding what to do. Finally I thought stuff it, I'm going in. Well the player was gone, bloody server hopper. It was really disappointed to see players only caring of arming themselves for pvp and nothing else.
