Campfires

So I did some searching around to see if anybody had addressed the draw distance for campfires.  After finding nothing, I decided to do a test for myself.  

I lit a fire on a patch of beach that was easily visible from the stern of the RIfy.  When I climbed to the top of the ship, I was pretty surprised to not see anything.  This was well within 300m and SHOULD have been clearly visible because one would be able to clearly see a player at this distance...  

Also, I have all my config settings that control the distance that things appear set to be no lower than 500m.

Anyone else notice this?  Having a campfire lit should be a risk, not a comfort.
