Losing my place...

I've read quite a few guides but haven't seen this mentioned much. I never get to go back into my old character. If I build a guy up and then have to step out for dinner or a break, I'll find a safe spot and quit. When I come back in, I'll see my guy's image with all the gear etc but when I click on play, I'll start over at zero. I've resorted to going to history, every time, and clicking on the server I was last on, more often then not I start completely over. Any suggestions? Do server restarts simply reset loot and then you spawn back in at the same spot or a random spot?

Try a second floor behind a closed door. Make sure you're not in a high pop area, but this should not be happening.

I have been having issues to with character save. A couple of times I have started the game only to find my character gone. I close the game and restart, still gone. Spawn as a bambie, quit, restart game, character still gone, Had just about given up and resigned myself to spawning as a bambie, character still missing from start screen. Spawn and what do you know, my geared character has suddebly reappeared. Haven't figured this out yet.
