[Suggestion] Focus mode

Recommended Posts

Suggestion is to completely revamp the way shooting mechanics work and closely try to mimic using video game concepts the trance that an experienced shooter goes through when focusing on making a shot.

The applications this would most benefit from is when using iron sights are when using scopes you would be stuck at whatever magnification the optic already uses.

My idea is to have the shift button function as a focus button when shooting, not holding your breath but instead a completely different button that could be used in conjunction with holding your breath.

How it would work is in order to maximize the potential of a shot you would have to go through a series of steps that progressively increase your accuracy potential for a calculated shot.

  • How it would work is you aim your weapon like you would ordinarily you are presented with a far back view of the iron sights
  • uvXZaYi.jpg
  • You press shift and in a very progressive way the sound around you starts to lower and you can hear your characters heart beat as this is happening very slowly your character begins to focus on the iron sights of the firearm and they slowly get larger and come into focus.
  • F3tevpT.jpg
  • Eventually after a set number of time depending on your stance ie. Prone : 3 seconds, crouch or sitting : 4 seconds , Standing : 5 seconds you achieve maximum focus and are firmly concentrated on the iron sights of your rifle and have far more precision and reduced sway. At this point you hear only your characters heart beat and breathing you can then hold your breath to prepare your shot. Once you shoot you lose complete focus and are reverted back to your initial state of firing.

  • Final view is this the entire screen focused on the irons after the max focus time

This idea would add depth to the shooting and at the same time promote or at the very least allow some of the firearms to be used well within their actual effective ranges even within a video games limitations.

My only problem with this is how zoomed in those last 2 shots are. Our eyes don't act as a variable zoom scope when we focus on something.

I have to add that at least with iron sights if you focus too long to the same point you lose the focus. I've to watch somewhere else and start looking again through the sights.

That last pic is too much IMO and I'm not sure about that third one either. But some smooth progressive zoom could be cool thing to try.

Of course not but the human eye is also not 1080p it is substantially I mean substantially higher thus the way we perceive distance can only be emulated in game via some sort of zoom.

Btw those rocks are only 200m away not a huge distance away so while it might appear really zoomed it really isnt and could probably use a little more zoom to allow it to be used up to 500m on a human sized target.

Overall I just thought of the idea as a means to increase the viability of iron sights to be used in their effective ranges.

There seems far too much of a reliance on optics in the game already with nearly every weapon having some sort of optic to aid in shooting.

Irons in real life are perfectly viable for shooting people up to about 500m with area targets being very much possible at 1000m.

The idea generally just increases the complexity and depth of shooting something I see as a good thing in a way that is not too gamey.

#1: Well, that's kind of the reason optics were made. For increased zoom (only magnified optics), and increased visibility.

#2: It really depends on the style of the irons. Some weapons have really thick irons that wouldn't be effective as, say a M4A1, for long range.

Where optics I think shine is in target identification it lets you aquire a target and then without any mistake know what the target is. This is where they shine however I really see no increased effectiveness with a scope or irons when shooting within a rifles effective range unless we are talking long range past 500m.

Yea and this should be reflected in game. The focus mode would work best with weapons that the irons were made for long range. Weapons with bad irons like an akm would obscure the target at 500m but be reasonable to use at 300m. Weapons like the mosn or the m14 with its awesome pep sights would allow for precise aiming at targets at 500m.
