Pretty self-explanatory, just chop down the handle of the splitting axe and make a hatchet. Benefits would be taking up less space, one-handed, maybe have it on your waist instead of your back.

Maybe, but I see a much more beneficial way by just making a survival hatchet as its own item. From a crafting standpoint, your idea sounds cool.

 

From an IRL standpoint, the handle of any axe acts as a counter weight. But this game isn't really about hyper-realism so why not :)

Can totally be represented by decreasing some qualities (e.g. damage, speed) and give a reason not to cut the handle if you don't need to.
