Macenzie 79 Posted June 29, 2012 You need at least 10 slots free in a backpack to hold a primary weapon. If you do not have space it will eat the gun.It will also attempt to move your magazines too, so make sure you have enough slots for them.
ALICE666 0 Posted June 29, 2012 Oh I see.. I know about the 10 slot thing but not about the ammo moving too. Thanks
Zeromentor 169 Posted June 29, 2012 I laughed at your name. I've had many ALICE backpacks eat my guns, so I feel this is some kind of joke anyhow. Cosmic or whatever.Anyhow, make sure you have 10+ spaces, as stated above. Also, make sure if you are replacing a weapon that you have the space for the magazines BOTH WAYS. For some reason the game likes to eat guns before magazines, so one wrong miscalculation is the end for your gun.Lost an M24 from this, didn't even get the chance to test the scope... Macenzie 79 Posted June 29, 2012 Lost an M24 from this' date=' didn't even get the chance to test the scope...[/quote']You're not missing out, the scope on the M24 is crap compared to the more common DMR. It doesn't zoom further with right mouse and does not work with NVG.Also 5 round magazines...
alienfreak 6 Posted June 29, 2012 the above.Just want to know how you guys do it safely. Lost many guns by;1. dropping main on floor in order to pick it up later but it vanished.2. using the arrows to transfer to and from backpack but it just ate one of my guns.1. Have as many slots free in your backpack as one magazine of your current primary weapon take. So in most cases its 1 free slot or in case of M240s and M249s it takes 2 free slots.2. Press G and open your backpack while not looking at loot so that you don't get an own screen showing the icons in full size but the list on the left side of the gear menu.3. Now move the weapon you want to have in your hands OUT OF THE BACKPACK.Scenario:CZ550 in hands. AKM in Backpack. Backpack has 1 slot free. Open Backpack and move the AKM into your hands. The CZ550 will now be in your backpack and you lose nothing. But note that not all CZ mags will be transfered in some cases and will stay in your main inventory even if there is space left in the backpack. They only get moved if your main inventory will be full with the AKM mags. (so its only moved if it has to be).If you fail to have 1 slot free in your backpack while transfering you will lose one magazine of the CZ550.

Kolchak (DayZ) 5 Posted June 29, 2012 Things to keep in mind:If you have ammunition in your backpack that will work for the weapon you're taking out of it, it will shift that ammunition to your Inventory, attempting to put the extra magazines for the other weapon in the pack, but often "Dropping" them. Usually it targets ammo, but occasionally, it targets other things. Point being, if you have 3 mags in your backpack for the weapon you're switching to your inventory, it WILL be moving 3 items to your inventory, so if needed, do some inventory shifting to accommodate."Dropping" doesn't mean they land at your feet, it means they land on the nearest spot to you they can. Sometimes it's at your feet, sometimes it's outside the building you're in, sometimes it's under the floor of the building you're in, and sometimes it's on another plane of existence. Slopes are bad, buildings with large parts you can't go into (schools, barracks) are bad, flat open areas are good if you're switching weapons, more of a chance for any "Dropped" items to end up at your feet instead of vanishing from the material plane. My best tip, If you have 2 primaries, never carry more than 3 mags for either of them, and always keep those in your main inventory, never your pack. And when you do switch, ALWAYS take a moment after the switch to check your inventory and see if anything's dropped to your feet. I've left several mags behind before I started doing this. heathy87 1 Posted June 29, 2012 I stopped carrying 2 primarys because its too bugged atm, you never get chance in the heat of the moment to switch between the 2 anyway, just stack up on mags for one primary and your good to go.if by chance you do get 2 good weapons from a crash site or something, the only safe way to switch weapons as ppl have said is to find a nice open flat bit of land and drop your primary then take the other from you bag, then picking up your first and putting that in the bag.its a bit iffy, i've managed to drop stuff on slopes and have it create a loot pile, but it may not work all the time. dallas 5195 Posted June 29, 2012 1. Never use the "drop" button in your inventory unless you're trashing a piece of gear.2. When switching weapons, drop all gear on the ground, unless you've got enough space.3. When depositing gear on the ground, always use the left inventory window and the < arrow buttons >. You have an CZ550 with 6 Mags in your main inventory. Now you move your AKM out of your backpack and it will move the three magazines of it with it and just as many CZ550 magazines into the backpack. So in the end you have an AKM with 3 mags for it and 3 mags for the CZ550 in your main inventory and an CZ550 with 3 mags in your backpack (with 5 open slots). Not rocket science :)
Eiskrem-Kaiser 54 Posted June 29, 2012 This video explains, how to change your weapons. Always FROM the backpack TO THE inventory. So far, I never lost a weapon switching like that. (Once the weapon in the backpack became the same as the on in the inventory, but that was due to an unrelated bug)
Finkle 0 Posted June 30, 2012 This thread actually helped my irrational fear of carrying and swapping main weapons.. What I used to do was drop something on the ground that wasn't a big deal in case I lost it.. Then used that as a loot pile to dump everything and put it back in my pack. Worked ok but took a long time.
