Squad XML for DayZ

Recommended Posts

If you have played the mod and have been a part of a clan or group, some of you will know what a squad XML is from Arma. I'd like to see that be implemented into DayZ, it wouldn't be hard seeing as Bohemia is basically taking over development of the game. For those of you who are unfamiliar with squad XML's basically what they do and how they work is basically you fill out this, I'll use my Arma II

Squad XML for example.

<?xml version="1.0"?><!DOCTYPE squad SYSTEM "squad.dtd"><?xml-stylesheet href="squad.xsl?" type="text/xsl"?><squad nick="BK">	<name>Bambi Killers</name>	<email>N/A</email>	<web>N/A</web>	<picture>BK.paa</picture>	<title>BK</title> 	    <member id="Player ID" nick="In-Game Name">		<name>N/A</name>		<email>N/A</email>		<icq>N/A</icq>		<remark>N/A</remark>	</member>

Now what this does it will show in game your clan emblem (if you uploaded one), show all of the clan information and also some of the players information. It will also add a clan tag to the end of your name automatically, in my case it would be MadWookie [bK]. It also shows your clan emblem on some vehicles and on some clothing in Arma II. qK8pvwU.jpgIn order for any of this to work you would have to upload your squad XML file to a drop box or some other file sharing website, make sure that they are put into a public folder and then give your players the public link once you have filled out their section of the XML (their Player ID and their IGN exactly as it is in game). XML's are fairly simple so it wouldn't be too hard for people to start using them more commonly.

Good suggestion, have my beans sir.

I would like to see the format maybe changed a little.  Remove the email/IM, or change it to "Skype" or something that everyone uses nowadays.

Thank you. I would prefer if we could change the format ourselfs for example replace email and icq with "Contact" and then we could put TS3 IP's and/or skype names in there.

Have another can of beans sir.  Hopefully this will be added.  I really enjoyed using it on the mod, people could find out alot of info about the clan from it.

Hahaha, thank you again. :D Yes, I indeed hope someone higher up will see this and get the idea to a dev.

Meh... I'll probably get flamed for this but...

Clans and guilds are overrated. This coming from a guy who's been on the bleeding edge of mmo progression since UO was king.

I guess I think that the game doesn't need to support groups (guilds/clans) at all. I'm all for them but only with 3rd party programs and websites.

I love how s Koreans have been able to pug 25 man hard mode raids with great results that westerners would otherwise fail miserably at. I want that kind of gaming culture. I think a game that helps form communities only hurts itself, tbh. Make clans work harder.

I remember in one of the dev blogs wayyyyy back that rocket mentioned something about how the clothing was so diverse so clans/groups could identify each other. This could be used for way more than just groups, solo players could very well set this up and use it to have their skype info in the player list etc. Also, I used to run in a small squad, maybe six guys all together and we'd put it on just because we didn't want to waste money on a website or something like that. All this will do is add some information about the player to the player menu. btw, not flaming. :P

Instead of making players deal with xml code, why not just make a website where you can login and fill in this info?  Then you could have a central repository of clans and people could recruit/etc. and the ghetto editing of xml would be unnecessary.

That would be great! But who would make a website and host it? I don't think the devs are going to go into that depth for this, where as BI could just implement the squad XML system.

Just saying that this is supposed to be a 'stand alone' game, not a mod, so if they were going to include features like this from the start, some other system than hacking xml code would be preferable.  They could even add a menu in-game to edit this type of stuff.  I was thinking website because it would be very easy to program and manage, plus the game studio probably already has an annual budget for web hosting.

I'm okay with this, as long as the "text" clan tag is just skipped, there is nothing i hate more in game than those stupid bracketed tags.

The clan logo/arm patch doesn't bother me in the least tho.

Thats the entire reason I want them is so I don't have to explain to my guys how to put on tags. But they should make it optional.

That's understandable I suppose. Honestly I don't even care who does it or how its done I just want Squad XML in SA. :P

Sorry, I'm using an old form of the word hacking -- I meant to say 'typing a lot needlessly'  Regardless of how standard XML is, filling in a form is a human thing, writing XML is a machine thing.  The only reason to make players write XML is the devs are lazy or they never intended players to modify the file in question.

Look ... this is just XML, not a binary format. The whole point of XML is to be both human and machine readable. It's as difficult as filling a configuration file...

Plus the idea behind squad.xml files was that clan admins could update them in real time from the clan's web server.

Ok - make it as complicated as you want.  No reason to spend a few minutes writing a program to simplify things if the community prefers complex.

Can't find anything about it, all though I suppose it is related to people asking about grouping and such to be implented.

I however just want to know if there's ever been a dev post or reply to anyone asking them about us being able to use the squad.xml setup that we have in arma2/3.

IE,  Emblem/badges etc, player info and the like.

I'd post an example if I could find one, - but I just woke up and my googling abilities are currently malfunctioning.

Regards, Nainer.

Edit; seems someone did post this somewhere! Neat. This be a must have!

Yes this is something I would like to see implemented.!

It would be cool if eventually they could make it a bit more immersive, for example the logo that appears on vehicles, that could be done 'in-game' if you found paper, a knife and spraypaint (craft a stencil)... As for the logo on the clothing that could be done if you found a needle and thread? just an idea..
