I agree. The Dev Team could go to a range that rents out automatic weapons like at Las Vegas or Czech Republic and fire live rounds (LIVE ROUNDS, not blanks) with recording equipment for a more authentic experience.

The sound does not need changing. Having fired a similar rifle, the L98A2, in real life, the M4 sound is perfectly adequate.

Remember, it's only a 5.56mm round - that's roughly the size of a .22 round, just with a larger charge behind it.

When you are firing the weapon, the sound is directed mostly to your direct front and sides, you hear relatively little of the report. What you do hear, however, is the working parts moving.

Listen to this video of an AR-15 firing.

From the position of someone behind the weapon - i.e, you, in game, the weapon makes a very small report. The sound we hear is some of the sound of the weapon firing, the sound of the working parts moving, and the weapon's report echoing back off the surroundings.

I'd be happy to accept your help.  Is there something in particular that you think I need help with?

The sounds in DayZ are horrible in general. They weren't exactly top notch in ArmA II either, which is ironic.

If you haven't already, I suggest checking out JSRS at some point on ArmA II. That is what it should be like.

Have you ever fired your rifle without Earpro? It will deafen you. 5.56 not only has a longer casing than a .22 and thus more of a bang, but the birdcage style flash suppressor does little to mitigate noise.

Videos are not accurate representations of being near a firearm being discharged. Even the humble M855 will deafen a shooter without earpro.

I'm not saying there should be a peanlty in game for using a firearm. What I am implying is a firearm should be very loud noticeable and not the current weak noise it is in game.

the m4 sound is changed already in experimental. And I am not sure I like it. It sounds too similar to AKM now. Sharper than before.

Yes, I have fired the rifle with and without ear protection, ball and blank.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the current weapon sounds are placeholders.

The current M4 sound is ridiculous, it is true. No firearm sounds like that IRL. Check the videos in previous posts to get the idea.
