How to locate where people are shooting?

Recommended Posts

Two words; experience and logic.

First: Experience - the more you play the game the more you get to understand where people are likely to shoot you from on certain parts of the map. Where this falls down is against a new and inexperienced player, as this negates the assumption you make in that the shooter has positioned themselves so that they are in a safe position before they started firing, but in general you should have an idea. Experience also tells you that if you are near somewhere that spawns weapons (obviously airfields, but also fire stations and offices). It's certainly not uncommon for someone to find a weapon and immediately want to try it out. Of course experience is also one of the best things to use in not getting shot at (don't walk out in the open in the city on a busy server, for example) but then sometimes you just have to accept risk as part of the game - and a fun part too!

Second: Logic - this is where basic maths comes into play. Essentially if you are being shot at once, it's probably likely you will be shot at again. If you are shot at immediately think of what cover you have at that moment. That tells you where the shots didn't come from. If you are out in the open then that's not going to help but if you have wall to one side them logic decrees that the shot did not come from the other side of the wall. The sounds in DayZ are pretty poor as most will agree although you should have a rough idea of the general direction. Mix that with where they can shoot from and look to cut down the available angles. For instance if you take a typical square based building. If you get shot at and you are standing on the South West corner that means that the shots didn't come from the North East and most likely not the North or the East. If you can somehow find something that blocks the line of sight from the South and/or West then you will be reducing the chances of being hit.

Obviously every situation is different, with a different location, different enemy (and all that entails - weapons/experience/desire to kill you/etc) so there is no hard and fast rule, and until there is a decent sound system built into the game where you can spot an enemy simply from a single shot (my favourite was MoH:AA where the sounds were so good that surround sound headphones you could pretty much tell where anyone was walking let alone firing!) you have to rely on these two things; experience and logic.

One's mouth as well. They should fix that at some point, if you're unconscious or dead you shouldn't hear a peep, nor be able to talk shit.

i was shot at the airfield yesterday night ! ( SAD PANDA I AM ) BUT i was lucky i took a bullet to the head ( lucky ? whats wrong with me ?? ) and i was instantly unconcious ( is that written right that way ... never mind ) That Ballistic Helmet saved my ass !

So instead of pussying out i waited what would happen.

after a minute or two i could hear the guy at my body ( obviously looting me ) and then i heard him leave,

so thank god i didnt gave him crap over the microphone because another 3 min later my char woke up.

i bandaged myself picked up the rest of my gear AND my fully pimped m4  and crawled to safty.

before i catched the bullet in the head i was shot at 5 times by that dude and noo way i could have told where those shots came from

and i have a logitech G35 7:1 headset. ! (  in battlefield3 i cold hear a mouse fart 200 m away AND could tell u where she was, but in this game u only hear Zombie rabbits screaming and pipsis opening all over the map )

Reminds me of a time at the NWAF when I was shot by someone that didn't do a good enough job at killing me. I always keep all my health indicators as high as possible (bright green) so if I do get hit it has the least amount of damage to me. I had been having a bit of a running battle with the guy (he had started shooting me) and although I had caught him at least once he had done the same to me. It came down to a bit of hide and seek around the treeline to the South of the airfield and he must have seen me sneak under a tree as he took me out. I went unconscious but he didn't finish the job. I heard him patch himself up, and (as I found out he was robbing me of my gear). However within 30 seconds or so I came back to life to see the guy less than 10 metres away looking in a different direction to me and doing nothing (I presume he was messing with his inventory). So it was a simple job to sneak up behind him and axe him to the head - luckily he had left me my axe, although had robbed me of all my weapons and ammo. I didn't make the same mistake he had though. I grabbed his gear (which was mostly my gear) that hadn't been ruined and put a final a bullet to his head before he regained consciousness.

Moral of the story, if you are going to kill people, make sure you do.

In reference to the topic, I didn't know where the guy had started shooting me from but I knew where he had most likely done so (the small hill close to the end of the NWAF runway, hidden by bushes) using that experience I then used logic to restrict the angle he could have if he was shooting from that spot and sure enough I had forced him to break cover and come chasing me. So, experience and logic combined. Didn't help me after that though, as I shouldn't have hidden under a tree in retrospect. Still, there is a moral to that story too.
