Chat problems in Epoch

I am playing in DayZ mod for the first time and am having trouble chatting. The key is set to default "/"  but I rarely get any response. Is there something I am missing?

The period or full stop "." key changes the chat modes between side chat, direct, vehicle and group. Side chat is the blue text anyone can see, direct is nly for people within seeing distance.

 

Then hit  "/" to open the text box.

Edit: I think the game defaults to a chat nobody can see.
