Most likely the title of this thread is misleading and it's not really a problem to troubleshoot nor seek I advice.

 

Once I logged out with a fully equipped character in a safe place on a very low populated server with now zombies nearby.

 

When I logged in again I started with a new character, thinking that my character died between the logout and his disappearance from the world. I didn't like the setup of the new character, so I ran to the nearest building and jumped down to die again and to be able to customize the next character.

 

After jumping down I respawed with my old fully equipped character in the place where I logged out.

Did you respawn in the same server? Had you switched between hardcore and regular servers accidentally?

Can't remember whether it was the same server or the same game mode. Have I missed something? Isn't your character done no matter where he dies, since you can have only one at a time? First I thought, my fully equipped char was victim of an alpha bug.

Regular and hardcore are two separate hives so you will have a different character on each.
