Can Someone Explain To Me What Happened?

Was playing last night with some friends, the server we were on was really laggy so we decided to go to a different server. We were at the office building in Berezino. I didn't want to get off there so I went to the tan house across the field from the front entrance, while they stayed there. I went upstairs and logged off. I found a server, only to be greeted with typical "Please Wait..." fare. I tried getting into it twice, and that happened both times. Had to wait 99 seconds each time. My friend tried once more and he got in, so I tried one last time. I finally got in and I thought, cool, I get to play now.

I immediately turn to my left and I see three people (which I insist were duplicates of the same person..they were all wearing the same clothes.) kneeling down in handcuff position. There was what looked like a freshspawn standing over top of them, and my first thought was, oh my character glitched loading in and he is handcuffing me. I told my friends to get to me, but they didn't know where I was. I tried getting out my SKS but it wouldn't come out...(Dayz law: when you see someone and need to get out the appropriate weapon, you can count on it not coming out.) So then I tried the machete...also wouldn't work. So I went up to the guy and he loaded in fully and he appeared to be fully geared. I started punching him in the face. Suddenly from there, he split into two separate characters (both looking the same) One walked downstairs casually, the other I knocked out. I was so confused by what was still going on I thought the handcuffed guy was still me (even though we weren't wearing the same clothes) I went to grab the M4 off of the guy I knocked out and was killed by the guy downstairs.

I still can't figure out what happened. It had to have been a glitch to see three of the same character getting handcuffed? It had to have been a glitch that they were getting handcuffed by one guy that split into an identical one? Or were they hackers trying to dupe their gear? I have no idea how that works but I just can't figure this out. Something vaguely similar happened a few months ago where my friend split into two characters...on my screen he was lying on the floor of the grocery store and I asked him if he was in there and he said no, so I killed him and he died....even though he was at the well near the hospital.

TL;DR Sometimes this game can be so frustrating for all the wrong reasons.

One time, I thought I was looking at a Dupe of myself. The character was just kneeled in this building constantly staring at me with all of the same gear.

So, thoughtlessly, I pulled out my axe and hit what I thought to be myself upside the head.

Upon rummaging through "my gear" I found that this player was only wearing the exact same gear as me... his pack was totally different >.<.

I thought it was my character at first, but I remembered after I died I was wearing a yellow raincoat and none of those characters were. I didn't mean for this to go into the direction of cheating talk I just wasn't sure if that is what I was seeing or if it was a bug. Still doesn't make sense to me hah

OP - you were witnessing someone utilize the known duplication exploit bug documented here:

It's one that I'm guessing people shouldn't know about but since it's in the list of known bugs I figured it was fair to share. There's YouTube videos that show exactly how to do it that I just found. Jesus that's pretty bad, I wish there was a way to discover steam names so these people found doing it could be banned.
