Don't know if I am perseverant or just dumb

Recommended Posts

I am roughly two hours from spawning semi geared and at the NW Air Base. Coming down the tower in the firestation and hear a zombie or two at the bottom that must have saw me in the tower. So I creep half way down the last flight of steps to the ground floor to shoot them and I either slipped or glitched off the steps but I broke my leg. Shot the Z's from the prone position and no blood loss. Check my inventory and had a set of sticks but the bandages I had in my pants along with everything else including the pants are now ruined status. Could not make a splint, no rags or t-shirt either so I am SOL.  Considered suicide but decided to at least look around a little to see if I can find something.

Crawl around the fire house no luck. Tried to crawl up the steps but can't navigate them with a broken leg. Reconsider suicide by zombie and fire off some more shots to attract attention but again heard a little voice that said to me "SURVIVE". I crawl across the runway to the ATC tower but still nothing on the bottom floor. Try again to crawl up the steps but can't do it with a broken leg. Crawl around the side and am able to climb the ladder. Crawl around the square walk way and takes me 10 minutes to squeeze through the door. Again no luck. Crawled back out and considered suicide again but climbed back down the ladder heading west through whatever storage shed and building I could find along the runway looking for a rope, duct tape or t shirt to tear into rags. Went through the storage shed, warehouse, another storage shed hoping to find anything to make a splint. Still find nothing I can use. Got to the jailhouse west of the fire station crawl around the bottom floor and again nothing. Try to make it up the stairs but still can't navigate them so I realize just stick to the bottom levels of buildings.

At this point I am now determined to fix my broken leg. Crawl through a barrack and a few more sheds and finally see a rope on a shelf but cant make through the doorway. The rope is just out of my reach but I keep trying to wiggle through. Finally wiggle my way through and get the rope but what the hell? I can't make a splint with the rope and sticks. Crawl past the two hangars into the next shed and there is a roll of duct tape hallelujah...can't make a splint with duct tape and sticks either. At this point I feel like the DayZ gods are just mocking me now...yet I carry on slowly crawling my way to the tent area where I had previously came from.

Killing the occasional zombie that spots me with my M4 from the prone position. Slowly but surely inch by inch I fInally arrive and cant get in the first tent because of a couple of steps so proceed to the next. Nothing there just a few random pieces of gear or ammo. All I am looking for is a shirt or bandage at this point to make my splint. One by one I peak inside but to no avail just guns, ammo, attachments and cargo pants or tactical vests. I am half way through the tents and the next thing I know I am blindsided by a zombie I never heard coming. Shoot him but this time I am bleeding. Had to kill a few more that were attracted to the dinner bell I just rang and finally the parade of zombies stops so I can proceed with my search. My hope fades quickly as I bleed like a stuck pig and feel like I just wasted so much time getting here only to bleed out. Slowly I can see that things are starting to fade to gray but I continue on, I tell my self if you have come this far keep going until you bleed out and fall unconcious whats a few more minutes after my hour long crawl across the airfield.

Next couple of tents still nothing while my "clothes are soaked with blood" and everything is now black and white. Had a few moments of excitement spotting some clothing items but each time it turned out to be pants or vest/jacket which you can't tear into rags much to my dismay. Then suddenly there it is...my saving grace that I had just spent the two hours crawling around searching for....a damaged tan tactical shirt. I immediately tear it into rags and bandage my leaking body. Next I use the rags to make a splint and patch up my broken leg.

In the hundreds of hours I have logged in Standalone searching for the once elusive LRS which are now plenitful, press/anti stab vest, Engraved 1911 or whatever mythical item I would never have thought that the most exciting thing I would ever find to date is a damaged tan tactical shirt. Looking back I don't think I would do that again but it was the most frustrating yet enjoyable session of DayZ I have had to date. I still think I am kind of stupid crawling around for 2 hours when I could have respawned and regeared in that same amount of time.

I just felt like I had to get that out. Might not seem like a big deal but it was an amazing moment for me for some reason.

I would have done the same thing.  My characters life has value, and when I'm in DayZ I try to roleplay as much as possible.  What you went through is what the game is designed for.  Survival.

Good on you sir.  Here, have some pristine beans.  :beans:

what you did, is play how the game should always be played.

also, you can get rags from bandanas , and you cant use bandages, it has to be rag and stick, (as far as  know).

dotn ever carry your morphine(or splint items) in your trousers, because trousers are always auto-ruined when you break your legs. anyway, well played.

oh yeah,1 more thing u can still climb ladders with broken legs, incase you didnt know that too

Haha, nice story. Glad I made the effort to read it.

I was in Berezino once, round the back of the hospital. Accidentally ran off the scaffold and broke my leg. Started crawling to the hospital, hoping to find some morphine, only to be twatted by a zed, which broke my arm too. Had same problem, couldn't get up the stairs. Decided to crawl around and use the ladder and just fall to my death.

As I was on my way around, I heard two guys coming. I called out saying I had broken bones and asked for help. They both ended up sitting with me on top of the hospital for about 20 minutes until their friend turned up with a splint. Miraculously, the splint fixed both my arm and leg at the same time. Ended up hanging with them until the server went down. Good times.

Good read, and props for not giving up. The game is the most fun when you actually value your characters life.

I went through a similar scenario once when leaving Chernaya Polana. Was on some rocks just SW of the city and broke my leg which of course destroyed the morphine that I carried in my pants. I now know that you should NEVER store morphine/splints in your pants. So anyway I decided to crawl back to the city and subsequently searched every building I could enter to look for morphine or a stick but found no such item and eventually (after about an hour or so) climbed to the top of the fire station, shot off all my weapons, and jumped off the edge.

Also, your story makes a good point that duct tape and rope should be acceptable options for crafting a splint.
