No "Specialized" Cartridges [Torchia Tweet]

Recommended Posts

I always found the CZ 550 amusing, in ARMA it seemed they couldn't decide what caliber it should be...

- the magazines were called "5x_22_LR_17_HMR"

- the rifle description said "9.3x62mm"

- the magazine description said "7x64mm"

- the bullets had an equal mix of the 7.62x51 and 7.62x54R properties

I think we do need 9x18mm though, otherwise we can't have a Makarov. There are a bunch of other handguns, machine-pistols and submachine guns that share the cartridge, more than enough to justify it, although I don't think it needs any more justification than "Makarov". In properties it's sufficiently different from 9mm.

Yea agreed same thing applies to the 5.45x39 there are more than enough Russian firearms and ak variants in this caliber to justify it's addition.

I'd personally rather they just have plenty of common calibers and mix them.

As long as they are reasonably common (or justifiable) in reality, why not have them in game?

.22LR, .22HMR, 9x18mm, 9x19mm, .32 ACP, .357 SIG, .357 Magnum, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .45-70, 7.62x25mm, 7.62x39mm, 7.62x51mm/.308, 7.62x54mmR,  7.63x25mm, 7.92x57mm, 5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, 6.8x43mm Remington, .30-06, .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, 4.6x30mm, 10mm Auto, .17 Remington, .338 Lapua Magnum, .300 Winchester, 10 Gauge, 12 Gauge, 20 Gauge, .410 Gauge, etc.

If they were really concerned with 'too many calibers', they could simply list what ammunition type a specific weapon utilized in its description. Sure, quite a few of them have similar or comparable ballistics, but it would mean people actually have to search for ammo they need instead of having a generalized system where ammo is readily available. I doubt the devs will take it to the levels I've suggested, but I'd hope at least a few of what I'd said get added eventually, if they're not already planned or ingame.

The only reason that I don't think 5.45x39 and 9x18M are necessary is that most of the weapons that these calibers would provide for can be chambered in 7.62x39 and 9x19P respectively.

Sure, they'd be beneficial to loot balance (as would any new caliber, in my opinion).

But, if they want to add a Skorpion... they can just go for a vz. 68/sa. 361.

If they want to add a Bizon, they can just go for the 2-01.

If they want to add a PM-63, they can just for the PM-70.

If they want to add an RPK-74M, they can just add an RPK.

If they want to add an AKS-74U, they can just add an AKMSU.

The only thing that I think actually demands 9x18M is the Makarov.

The substitute weapons would look similar but performance is different. It's not only the weapon I want to see, it's also the round. I like considering the difference between 5,45x39 and 7,62x39. It's necessary just because it's such a common gun and the CDF uses it. Only looking at "gameplay" it's not necessary but then neither is anything else. Any other bolt-action rifle? We already have a Mosin that does it all. Any other 5.56mm assault rifle? Just an M4 with a different skin. Etc.

But just from a development/technical standpoint, is downrange performance round-specific or is it values ascribed to the weapon itself?

As far as I know, all of the performance aspects are values ascribed to the weapon in DayZ separately from the round it fires. The ammunition/mag could be named "Yellow Jelly Beans" or "5.56x45" and the M4 would still behave the same as far as the game is concerned.

If it's the way I think it is (i.e. performance values ascribed to the weapon, regardless of what caliber it fires) then they can make weapons perform distinctly, while firing whatever they want to include. So it's not necessarily dependent on them including different calibers to provide for a weapon which is unique in terms of performance.

- magazine has the muzzle velocity

- projectile has damage, penetration, external ballistics, etc

So they do need separate ammunition unless it fires the same bullet. Guns only have "gun features" like zeroing, dispersion, rate of fire, etc.

Gotcha', makes more sense then!
