The pack - There should be 20-40 zombies traveling in a pack and travel only on a road. Or a common forest where peopel travel in. Would be kinda hard but a bit laggy.

Wandering hordes sounds good - dont know about performance effect though.

I'd love to see that in forests and the wilderness, would keep you on your toes. But lag may be an issue.

I'd second this, and add: if you clear out a town, or are in a town, zombies won't spawn in it 30 ft from you (aggroing the town when you've finally almost cleared them, but they happened to spawn again), but they will spawn in the woods or fields nearby and wander into town.
