Hi Folks,

I'm Josh Smith from Smith Sights.  It's kinda' awkward coming here because I'm don't play this game.

This game looks cool; unfortunately my laptop will not support it with the mobile chipset.  All else is good but the mobile video chipset, and I flat don't have time to build a gaming machine like I'd like to do.

I was contacted a couple months ago by a couple people who play DayZ.  They mentioned something about this game and wanted to know if a Mosin skin could be made which uses my sights, and that I might mention it here.

I flat don't care if you all use any of my sights for models.  I have some down-barrel pictures of the red sight and the standard sight I make if you need a reference.  I don't know for sure that the folks who emailed me about this were or are members here, but if you are, you're welcome to jump in if you'd like.

I really enjoy seeing a modern-set game with Mosins in it even if, at this time, I can't play it.  A lot of the mods done today would be out of place in the WWII games, but this one is pretty cool for them.

Additionally, if you all need any input about Mosins, I would be glad to answer questions so far as I can, anway.  I've been studying the practical uses and mods for the rifle for over three years now, building mainly on Finnish work from the '20s and '30s.

I never claim to be an expert at anything, but if anything I've played with will help you folks out, you're more than welcome to use it or ask about it.

Regards,

Josh

Awesome to know we will have more sights for the mosin. And real ones as well. I'm not a gun nut by any means but I love the old bolt rifles, and the mosin is possibly my favorite, even over the lee enfield or the springfield.

Can we fix it so that you can't just a slide a scope onto a Mosin just like that? The Mosin does not have a rail for a scope, and in order to fit a scope you need to drill into the stock and professionally implement a Scope-rail. So Mosins should not be able to fit scopes, as that is un-realistic.

Well presumably that's what he was contacted for, realistic scopes for the mosin's and the current LRS will go to the blaze or another civvie rifle.

Whats a reasonable price to buy a mosin I see from $500 - $1000.

Given that folks reel away in disgust at the mere hint of a modified firearm on these forums, as if it's somehow unrealistic (LOLOLOLOL) I doubt folks would like this (even though the bolt-handle on the Mosin in-game is clearly aftermarket).

Sounds neat though!

I assume this is it...

That and people think the PU scope is somehow less difficult to mount. It requires you to cut a big notch out of the stock.

I'll never get the idea that gets put into people's heads that this is somehow "unrealistic," when it can be done in reality.

Never mind that there are pragmatic gameplay concerns here, which may or may not outweigh "realism."

My Zombie friend wants a word with your idea of 'realistic' gameplay. But yeah, it's a great idea to get some other RDS on the Mosin - I usually play with a long range but if I'm ever needed in the group to take someone out who's closer then I have to detach, use awful iron sights and then re-attach the long range scope.

Hi Folks,

I have that Brass Stacker mount referenced by C.O. Wolf and can attest to its quality.  In fact, I have a Brass Stacker leather cuff with cheek piece to go with it.

I don't mount it for ranges under 200 yards, usually.  But it does work, and it works well.

There are all sorts of sights I make.  They are

front%20of%20sight_display.jpg

complete%20LB%20sight%20listing.jpg

red_display.jpg

gold%20standard_sm.jpg

display_green.jpg

... and several others, plus mix and match posts.

The red one looks like this:

mounted2.jpg

The green one looks similar, only, you know, green.

This is Brass Stacker's butt cuff I use with the 'scope next to the one I use with iron sights (mounted):

brassstacker3.jpg

The PU 'scope will slide into place if the mount is already on.  The majority of Mosins, it is not.  The Brass Stacker mount uses the mounting holes on the rear sight.

Just some thoughts.

Regards,

Josh

Snip

Did you get contacted by the Devs (Rocket and BIS) or someone from the modding community?  While it'd be cool if the Devs contacted you for permission, I don't think they would have said to just post pictures of your work on here (they rarely use the Forums as their primary anymore).  If it was someone wanting to mod the game, it's a bit too early for that to happen, modding support won't be in a for a while, and you can't legitly edit game files yet.  That's for Standalone at least, and I don't think there's a mosin in the mod(s).

Still would be cool to have something more than Soviet surplus as attachments.

Mike,

I don't know what their usernames here are, or if they're even members.  Could be lurkers.  If you PM me email addresses, I can confirm/deny for you.  Could have just been random folks who play the game.  I flat don't know.

I can take the pics down.  That's not a big deal.  Anything I can help with, I'd be wiling.  All I was told was that something's in development and they'd like to see one in there.  I assume it's for Standalone, but I don't know.

If I pull the pics, I'll stick around if you all would like and see what I can do to help with the old milsurps in standalone.  The Mosin isn't the only one I own.

Regards,

Josh

I think a few of the earlier posters may have thought this was concrete.

Hello,

Can you fill me on on this?

Earlier posters thinking this was concrete?

I don't want to waste anyone's time if this is not going forward.  I'm actually here between manufacturing stages.  That's when I try to drop around to talk on gun forums, and I decided to add this to my rounds as I was able to make time for it.

I guess I don't understand where you all are at in this, and my specialties are limited to the Mosin right now.  My modding skill stopped around 1996; I did write a couple mods for a Star Trek game but that was a long time ago.

Regards,

Josh

I think there might be a bit of miscommunication here.

For one, this forum is populated by a lot of folks who do no work in modding (although there are certainly some).

Second, this is the forum for the DayZ Standalone. If you want to add content or get content added, you're going to have to go through the developers themselves rather than modders (until modding is enabled).

I think a few of the early replies may have thought that this was something solicited by the developers (rather than someone who mods independently for DayZ).

Don't get me wrong, I welcome what you're offering.

Blast, how did I miss? hmm, now that you are here, perhaps you can catch the attention of Rocket and Bohemia and have them implement your sights as an attachment or as default. as is the irons are hard to see unless you zoom (for me) and fiber optic sights would be excellent.

Basicly as said already, from what the first few responders reaction was it almost sounded like they thought the Dev Team approached you about adding your sights to the game.  I wanted to get clarification on that.  I don't know Rocket or any BIS staff emails off hand (I'm sure they're probably somewhere on this very forum, but not really worth hunting down ATM).  You have some good looking sights (If I buy a Mosin I'll look you up to see if you ship to Hawaii) I just thought it was somewhat suspicious that someone would ask you to post your product here (where most people who do 'suggestions' will often just post pictures of what they want)

I'd also like to ask if you have a website?

*EDIT* and like an idiot I see the URL on the pictures after I hit post...

Agreed.

Hello,

I wasn't here to advertise so I didn't make the website readily apparent.

Anyone have any idea how to get ahold of the folks who need to be contacted?

I personally don't have a stake in this matter; it's only because a couple customers contacted me about it that I stopped by.  Very cool looking game that I'd love to play sometime, though!

Josh

Wait... Are you talking about real life? Lol. Mosins Cost anywhere from 100 to 180 bucks depending on condition. Trust me, they made 17 million of them during WW2, they are in no way rare. I got mine for 180 as all the serial numbers matched for my bayonet and stock, barrel, etc. and it was in excellent condition.

I like this one.

This is just an awesome picture IMO.

Looks like you can still use the iron sight with this setup as well.

That second one is JMeck's mount!  He's a good guy.

The first mount looks like an ATI, and they're not worth much.

I personally like the forward-mounted 'scope mounts as I'm a lefty and I reach over to work the bolt.

@rocket2guns is his twitter, that'd be starting from the top but I don't really know if that's a good way to contact him or not.  I'm sure any public email he might have will have been spammed to death.  Rocket usually posts on the DayZ redit (I know nothing about Redit so I have no link there).  Gonna PM a Mod here and see if they can get you in contact with someone on the Dev Team.

Mounting a scope should atleast require a rail to also be found.
