Food?! Can't fill up water bottle at pump?

Hey guys, whenever I'm playing DayZ I have no problem at all finding tinned food (tactical bacon etc.) But I can never find an axe, knife or can opener? What other kinds of food is there (apart from rotten fruit?) And why can't I fill my water bottle up at a pump, it just says "Drink water" not "fill bottle".

Tuna, powdered milk, fruits n veggies, and rice are all usable without any type of opening device

You can fill up a bottle at a pump, but it's alot easier to use when your in 1PP.

Find cans of food in military areas, as well as big cities, can openers found in the same types of places. You can drink straight from a water pump, but if you wish to take water with you, go into first person, put water bottle or canteen into hands, scroll, look for "Fill canteen/bottle" and then press MMB.

yep, gotta have canteen or bottle in hand to actually fill it. quick way for me is to hotkey the canteen, bandages, melee, ranged, pistol and epi and morphine. those are the things I might need super fast. just hit canteen hotkey, approach well, scroll down to fill bottle, and then hotkey back to rifle.

When all things fail, you could always catch some rain in your bottle whenever it is raining. It is a pain in the ass, but it can save you from dehydration.

Can openers generally spawn in police stations, miliary places, and houses. Knives rarely spawn in houses. Bayonets tend to spawn in bars. Fire axes and screwdrivers spawn in fire stations.

 

The following instruments can open cans:

Can opener

Screwdriver (minor spillage)

Knives (kitchen, combat, bayonets, machetes) (minor spillage)

Hacksaw (medium spillage)

Axes (splitting and fire) (heavy spillage)

Pretty much every bladed instrument in the game.

 

Ruined instruments can be used to open cans.

 

Aside from rotten fruit you have the following:

Canned food (tuna, beans, bacon, peaches, spaghetti, sardines) (canned tuna be be opened without need for a can opener)

Fresh Fruit (Apple, Orange, Banana, Kiwi)

Fresh Vegetables (Tomato, Bell Pepper, Potato, Zucchini)

Dry food (powdered milk, cereal, rice)

 

In order to fill your water bottle you need to move your mouse wheel to scroll along the list of actions.

As the game is at the moment it is pointless to carry bottles. There are no diseases so no point in purifying water. So just drop the bottle, free up some inventory space and drink your fill from ponds and wells. They are everywhere.
