Mosin + LRS cannot see impact

Recommended Posts

Hi,

yesterday a friend and me tried to work out new angles of attack on airfields etc.

As part of that we seek out overwatch positions and take notes for ranging.

While trying to do that yesterday we encountered a problem:

While shooting at approx. 600m I was not able to see the impact of the bullet on a building.

(I took the height of the frame and approximated mildots to guess the range and then started to range the scope)

Even my buddy with binocs could not see the bullet impact.

I tried it prone, kneeling, standing.

(While kneeling and standing I could not see the impact because of the recoil but my spotter should have been able to)

My settings are very high expect for bloom, clouds, shadows.

It was a while since I used a Mosin with LRS but I was able see bullet impact at much further ranges a while back.

Any ideas?

Edit: I did not mess with my configs manually.

Nope but people have been complaining of similar issues. Also I suggest you use the in-game map for ranging stuff, it is more accurate.

It's a known bug.

That does not suffice sadly.

Shooting down from elevations you cannot rely on 2D point A to B measurements.

When in a jiffy (being shot at that is) I do not have time to access the map - so a educated guess must do

that then will be refined by seeing if I under- or overshot.

But with not being able to see bullet impact I cannot correct my aim :(

It's a known bug.

Is it a bug that now exits generally or only on specific surfaces that do not display impact?

Also is there a workaround?

Thank you for your answers so far.

Just a general bug I believe, no shots past 100m display their impact is what I've read.  Something to do with them not even rendering any more at all, so I don't believe there is a work around.

Rocket replied to either some tweets or reddit posts about it.  I will try to find it.

You were talking about 600 meter shots,  over-watch position and taking notes for ranging, so you were clearly in a sniping spot and not getting shot at. Also that is why you aim a little lower than usual when you fire from/to an elevated position. Yea no doubt not seeing the impact of the bullet is a problem.

I've asked about it. My current (untested and completely unconfirmed) gut feeling is that a change in server/client simulation means that local bullet simulation is no longer being performed... hence no bullet effects. But I have not looked at this yet or discussed with relevant programmers.

there's the quote by rocket on it.

BTW DayZDB map has a built in ranging tool.  I think your method is cooler since it's done in game obviously, and I also agree with just using a map in game and estimating from there which is what I used to do in the mod (I never really pick up maps in the SA myself), but there's the cheapo way to do it.

In that instance I was just ranging my gun without anyone around - but that does not change the fact that it is problematic if you come under sniper fire

and you cannot dial in your shots under pressure because you cannot see your bullets impacting...

Nope, but if you know mildots you can "approximate" them in mind.

They have added mill dots to the LRS now?

Practice on zombies. You cant see point of impact but occasionally see blood- but not only that, the zombie goes down. Proof of impact right there :)

I tried this myself at about 400 meters last night at the NEAF. Hit and downed the guy on the first shot and did a follow up just to make sure he stays down. Both shots/hits I didn't see any blood. 8l

Edit: Also damn what the hell did they do to the Mosin recoil, it was as if I was firing a .50 cal from the hip.
