Supported Shooting - How Should It Be Done?

Recommended Posts

bump.

This should be added.

It would work like a bipod, but:

- with less "mobility" (~45-60°),

- should take up 1x2 slots in he inventory

- can't be directly mounted on a rifle/the new pistol, and needs to be "built up" before use for 2-3s

When persistent objects, like backpacks, are implemented, these could stay after a server-restart, too.

Yeah, I'd love to come across some sniper's hide via persistent objects. Would be wild.

It would be nice if we could use our ammo box or backpack.

This is why I like the fused approach of having pre-existing objects act as supports (a la ACE) and having portable/deployable items which can be used as fixed supports (a la shooting sticks).

Might lend to the approach of using backpacks and ammo cans as supports, I think it'd be best just to limit it to the backpack.

Hello there

There are a couple of "rest" mods out for A3.

One really likes you to have a flat surface to rest on and the other is far more forgiving.

I actually like the less "realistic one" as it essentially lets you rest your weapon against almost anything which although it cant be seen emulates leaning against walls/car bonnets etc.

ACE was great but sometimes was a bit too harsh on what you could rest on. An amazing mod though.

Forgot about this thread!

The new aimed-while-sitting animations are a great example of what supported shooting can be.

I'd still like some sort of support to further iron out the kinks with the new sway, when shooting from a fixed position. Being able to use shooting sticks whilst seated (the sacrifice being it takes longer to set up/break down) in order to get rid of that drunken sway would be lovely.

I don't find the map to be designed with resting guns in mind.  There's very few windows/walls etc that are the right height for it, or even have proper ledges that you'd be able to put your gun on in a way that makes sense.  Any system that tried to do this within the current game would just end up being even more clunky and funky imo so I could do without it.  I don't want magic "sticking" guns becoming suddenly perfectly stable, just because you hit a button near a ledge or whatever.  Games like Red Orchestra are designed with these mechanics from the ground up.

I'd like to see bipods stay as is, only functional when prone, maybe with some added dexterity penalty or something for being extended when standing.  I'd like to see them simply reduce sway to a significant degree when prone, but not be completely rock steady.

Shooting sticks I don't really care about, they seem largely impractical.  Any situation where you'd be using those in the game you may as well be prone.  That's not to say I'm opposed to them, I just don't think they're really a worthwhile addition.  Again, the map just isn't really designed with this sort of thing in mind.

(this is all under the assumption that current sway mechanics aren't complete)

And this is exactly what prompted me to put forth the idea of shooting sticks

You're right, the map doesn't have a lot of built-in spots for resting a weapon!

Which is why I'd like to give the player the ability to tailor his/her own supported shooting position around the world, to create better spots to shoot from. We're (or at least I am) already seeing this with the aimed-while-sitting animation, I've used it many times to just hang back in a building and snipe folks. It's a great thing to have a mobile, but still fixed, ability to steady ones aim without exposing oneself to overly apparent shooting angles.

The world doesn't lend itself to flexible supported shooting positions, so why don't we give the players the ability to create their own positions?

Good point, I see them being useful for that now, shooting from more concealed positions inside buildings or getting that particular angle outdoors, rather than being restricted to whatever tree just happens to be best to prone under =P

I suppose shooting sticks could be pretty cool and open up a whole slew of new sniper positions.

Still don't think the game needs a gun resting mechanics in the other sense though.
