Existential Doubts

Recommended Posts

A thing that happened today really got me thinking.

I approach the NEAF, searching for a LRS for my mosin. I see a guy running inside a hangar, I peak in and fire. Dead. Not taking the risk.

I rush to loot the prisons, as the loud 7.62 cartridge might have attracted unwanted attentions.

I just left the eastern prison when the server crashes. It's 5pm. Fuck me what a place where to DC.

I rushjoin a UK server with 0 people, I find myself in the second floor room of the prison, the one with the beds.

Loading noises, footsteps, I aim my Mosin at the door and wait. First guy comes in, a shot in the stomach leaves him dead on the floor. His friend rushes in too spraying the SKS. I break his legs and finish him with a head shot while he's agonizing on the floor. Didn't take the risk when I heard them coming.

I finish to loot the airfield, run to the small building at the western side and DC. People were pressing me to play Dota.

I won by the way. Cancer Lancer OP.

I log in a new server and I give the AF a last go before I set sails for Gorka. Western prison is closed, good sign. Loot it and loot the Control Tower. The AF seems empty. I put my mosin on my back and dash towards the hangars.

I enter the first one like a rocket, eyes on the floor to spot the oh so wanted scope.

I reach the left bottom corner. I turn around. There's a guy in the other corner. His gun is out, mine isn't, but he's looking at the floor.

I take out my mosin, but it's still on my back as the guy spots me and rises his SKS. The movement continues, slowly taking my Woodland Mosin off my back. His aim is on me for a long, long second while the animation finishes. I was so dead. I finally rise my gun, aim back. But he's not shooting. He had all the time and had all the reasons too.

"... Hello?"

"Oh, I'm friendly man... I don't shoot. Don't shoot, mkay?"

"... Sure. Uh. Just loot the airfield. All yours."

We look at each others for a few more seconds, I put back my gun and rush out of the hangar, away from that place. The guy looks at me for a second more, but returns to his loot on the floor even before I left the building.

He took the risk. He could have shot me at any time. I was clearly armed. I was taking out my gun.

A bluff? Was he out of ammos? I sincerely doubt so. He was fully kitted.

This guy was so chilled. Even in the voice. He wasn't nervous. He was just. There.

I was very fucking nervous instead.

But it got me thinking. Why? I wouldn't have done that in his place.

Would you have shot me? Or not?

Do /you/ take the risk?

Yes I do - a bullet to the head is too easy and no fun

I understand that, but.

A bullet in your head is even less fun.

I hope you understand what I mean.

I would have looked and saw him before entering the hanger.

I would have looked and saw him before entering the hanger.

Server time was about 9pm. Was pretty dark and I didn't want to stay too much in front of the hangar, so I checked very briefly. Coupled with his camo clothing, I completely overlooked him.

No, I don't cheat with the gamma.

Glad you didn't gank him afterwards :beans: . I wish I could be that calm man, but I'm a coward and would've wasted you when you went for your gun.

I would've done what he did. I would've asked for you to not take your gun out if i had the time  but if i hadn't, i still wouldn't shot you first.
The risk is why i play.  9 times out of 10 i will catch up and initiate some interaction with a person i see or meet.

That's how i set up my challenge for surviving people: Meeting them face to face or otherwise exposing myself as friendly before shots fired.
Everyone i have killed have had the chance to walk away peacefully.
And most times, making sure that if i have to die, they have to die is enough to reach a mutual understanding.

Well played. Beans to you.

Would be interesting to see a poll there.

I would act like that guy who spared you, since I would not have enough info whether you are hostile or not, though personally I don't think you deserved this kind of friendly treatment, no offence. If I knew about your previous murders I'd shoot without wavering, kinda missing humanity system of the mod. Take some courage and talk instead of shooting in panic. Once very long time ago back in the mod I was looting helicopter crash, saw a survivor nearby and killed him in fear that he'll shoot first, without trying to talk. Even though that is not a big deal killing someone in game, I felt so disgusted I decided to never shoot first unless I have some solid evidence that the person I meet is a bandit. Met a lot of cool guys ever since that I could've just shot on sight, had lots of fun playing together with them later.

I see your point and I answer with this. Would /you/, as in IRL, take the risk of being shot dead? Remember that you cannot respawn. And that out there it's full of psychos. I try to live each life as it was actually the individual life of a survivor, if you know what I mean. The only thing that keeps the game interesting. Food preferences, gun preferences, clothing preferences. I just can't avoid fearing for the life of my little heroes.

I still won't backstab people.

I would have probably shot you to be honest. I'm not a bandit KOS whore, but in that particular situation, I would have shot just to ensure my own safety.

The IRL situation is a tricky question. I guess it would be hypocritical to say that I'm 100% sure how I'm going to act when stakes are that high without ever experiencing such a situation. So instead I'd say is that I hope I stay strong to my morals. In game I do my best to survive and to ensure my own safety, but I just can't treat badly a guy that might be friendly, so I always try to figure out what person I am facing first. I don't like dying of course, have a little bit of fear for my character, but I always try to overcome it.
