What is the best food? Answer here.

Recommended Posts

I wanted to understand what the best food choices were in terms energy and water, and what would result in me getting 'stuffed' less frequently.

Here's what I've calculated, maybe it will benefit some of you.

BEST FOODS:

Summary (Wet)
Sardines gives the most energy and water per ml of stomach space.

Summary (Dry)
Powdered milk gives the most energy per ml of stomach space. However this would result in water ml loss equivalent to double what Rice removes. So depending on your circumstances, in game, Rice may be the better option and would use less inventory slots. - I call this one a tie (it really does depend on your water and inventory situation)

Summary (Fruit)
A Banana provides most energy per ml of stomach space, however the Apple has the best combined, but the greater part being water. The winner for me is the Banana.

Summary (Vegetables)
The Potato is the clear winner.

Summary (Drinks)
A Soda provides more kcal's than any fruit except the banana but top trumps this with water content.

Overall Summary

Sardines are the best overall food if water & food is in limited supply as it provides the most kcals and water per inventory slot. If you have an ample water source Powdered Milk or Rice is the best choice, Rice would be the preference if you are dying of thirst, if you are dying of hunger and can afford to take the hit on your water volumes, powdered milk is the best choice.

I hope this was informative, if any parts are incorrect let me know, the information was taken from the wiki, so hope this helps in your food stashing / eating endeavours. When Tactical Bacon / peaches are updated I'll update this post.

Sweet, this is actually pretty handy. Now I know which foods to collect to make my survival even harder cx Avoiding Sardines and Potatoes at all costs!!! (Well, maybe I'll sneak a potato once or twice)

I wonder if when we can cook stuff we will have to eat even less. Combining stuff and it being hot could make one decent meal last you a day, 3 square a day gets you the healthy status lol :)

Rice has less nutrition per ml of food than Powdered Milk

Blue berries are the best.

Seriously, they fill you up really fast, so useful.

Make sure to add Alcohol Tinture as a dipping sauce. No good without it!

Rice takes up too much space, Sardines and any other can (except tuna) must be opened. For these reasons I pick tuna. With its easy open flip top, loss due to opening is eliminated. Yes if you have a can opener you will lose nothing with the other cans, but how often do we have a can opener? My second choice is powdered milk.

can openers are everywhere but you have a valid point about the tuna.

If you have a large enough bag then I'd say Rice, 10% per intake and aslong as you are close to a water fountain you can be energized, hydrated and healthy off one or two bags. Then you'll not need to eat for a good few hours!

Next life mission: I'm going to try to survive solely on bacon and rasputin kvass for as long as possible. If only they had processed sliced cheese to add to the mix...

I usually eat a lot of rice, powdered milk and drink a ton of water.

Wouldn't you need 3.77 bags of powdered milk to get the same energy you would from a bag of rice? Yeah it's a trade-off, but I'd rather use two inventory spaces for food than four. I have more important things to carry.

It depends on how you view your priority I guess. Is it maximizing what you are putting in you, or maximizing your inventory space. I tend to agree with you about inventory space.

Indeed you would need 3.77 or 4 which would take up more inventory slots. If you ate 3 powdered milks + 80% of a 4th bag of powdered milk , you would have more kcal's but done it in 240 ml less on your stomach.

also based on the above scenario (3.8) -  as Powdered milk would de-hydrate you by an additional 520ml water you would need another 5.2 sips of water from a well to replace this which works out approx 260ml on your stomach. Therefore Rice may actually be the overall winner for Dry foods.

i've edited my recommendation based on this.

Hopefully the figures will help people prioritise which food to drop if inventory slots are needed , or which food to pick up if there's a choice and limited slots available.
