The server was desyncing REALLY hard and what happens is that while the cilent is off from the zombie (in your case) the server still records your position (server case). So, while you were away from the zombie on your screen in actuality you were right there standing still where the zombie was facing towards. You cannot fix this problem unless you and the server system is direct 100% connection again or else this happens.

Today I was playing on about 8 full servers (40) and they were ALL lagging badly. My ping was constantly over 200. Picking out the weapon was very hard to achieve... took me at least 5-6 times EACH time. Zombies were hitting me despite the 20 meter range. I don't even want to talk about the teleportations. Overall a mega laggy day(z)

Yeah, while I was sitting there getting hit and not being able to even pull things out I realized it was all a futile effort. I thought about logging, but what's the point?

 

I spawned back in and regeared in an hour.
