Extreme weather

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering wether this weather the current weather system allows for extreme weather conditions like storms? Since it is autumn in chernarus and it is on the coast, autumn storms should be fairly common. When winter is added then blizzards. HEAVY downpours.

Other weather conditions? Hail? Ideas?

Dean said snow and other extreme weather would be coming in Q3 2014. Snow won't keep on the ground, but it'll fall and make you cold. Should be interesting.

Hail might be something nice, snow is also a must. Theoretically, you could run around in snow without getting wet, but your temp should drop after about 20 minutes of being idle, longer if you are moving around /running.

Right now I understand that lots of people have trouble with rain lasting a while, like up to 20 Minutes.

I don't know if that's the balancing that was aimed for, but snowstorms could last hours upon hours...

What do you guys think?

Dayz needs players actually playing the game. If weather forces me to hide in a building for 45min, I won't play. I will switch servers. This is a zombie-survival simulator, not a weather simulator. The designers must always think realism vs playability. If they push realism above all else, people will likely be bored in a short amount of time. I don't want to sit and watch my character sleep, poop or hide inside for a whole winter.

I've had this same thought running around in the rain getting soaked recently. I like the fact that you'll have toske a choice about it, but the length if rainstorms definitely needs to be balanced. I haven't really paid attention to how long they last, but I'm going to start. I think 10 or 15 minutes max is a good starting point.

There are Rain-coats in the game already, although I'm not sure how much it stops you from actually getting wet, but if being wet/cold did something to increase calorie consumption then all of a sudden you're increasing food supply and not demand, cue tension amongst starving groups without raincoats and not enough to feed everyone. Pretty authentic zombie experience to me.

You could say the same for snow. You could run around in Full-Mil kit with an M4 and die of exposure or you could forego the protection of ballistic helmets and stab vests for an ushanka and a puffer jacket and be out in the cold looting frozen corpses. It'd be a tossup between a scavenger and combat path really.

Supply and demand based on things like weather creates value where there was none previously. You loot any corpse on a server these days I imagine you'll find guns, ammo food and maybe some medical supplies, but nothing else, and I think this will change as more features are implemented. You'll start to find hunting snares, gas stoves and anti-biotics when they actually serve a purpose, I'm not sure why the same shouldn't apply to clothing designed with specific weather conditions in mind?

would be cool if they added all different type of weather conditions, add another level of survival, snow is a MUST, downpours would be awesome.

I can't wait for extreme weather. It will give layered clothing a purpose (if it is added).

I was on a server a week or so ago that was raining constantly... would have sucked to have been detrimental to the player's health as most folks would happily leave the server for sunnier skies.

I wonder if you will leave foot steps in the snow. That's would be a nice way to track someone or something.

Would be nice to see different types of weather on the coast like ruff seas and hig winds later on in the game...i.e. when on a boat it could turn all of sudden causeing the boat to rock and a chance of making your player feel un easy XD

Tracking is a vital part of survival, so IMO this game desperately needs it. It would add so much layer to the game if there would simply be footprints in dirt or something. Imagine being able to track someone you want to kill, would be amazing.

even tracking for hunting animals. I'm sure it would be a lot for the server. dump that info when the server restarts, so you know the foot steps are only a few hours old.

Yup, tracking animals is awesome as well. Instead of running around in the hopes of seeing one, you meticulously scan the area for signs of animals having been there. It would make the game a lot more realistic and fun at the same time. Seems like a win-win kind of thing to me. I can't even begin to explain how well tracking both animals and humans would compliment the game

I think this kind of stuff needs to be implemented for mood and atmosphere first, and then how it affects the players.

Heavy rain and snow is a great way to naturally cut down visibility and add tension. Rain storms would also help to mask noise levels. Some people say they would hide inside as it rains, while some may see that as a great time to be out looting. Thunders storms? Great, now I can snipe those lil ants down there, masking my shots with the crackle of thunder and lightning!

If you introduce people to the positive aspects first, then you might have an easier time slipping in the negatives without losing players. I would also think that the negatives have to be severely watered down. Right now I think you get soaked in the rain a tad bit early. I think that side of gameplay would work better and be more widely accepted by the players if you went the other direction with it, take longer than normal to get soaked or cold, especially once that starts to mean something to the player.

The other side of weather that I would love to see improvement on is the audio. When it rains I would like to feel like I'm there, in the rain. That the buildings around me are there, in the rain as well. This means hearing the dripping of rain through and off gutters, hitting multiple surface types, changing the sounds a player makes when walking on wet surfaces or dry surfaces with dripping wet clothes. Audio should be huge for a game like this, and is no where close to where it needs to be. So here's hoping for big changes in this department in the future.

Winter would be really cool...
Also extreme heat might add something, water consumption, heatstroke if wearing too much clothes, draining ponds and wells etc.

Think is, you can't run in snow. Or sand, or mud. It's difficult enough just walking through snow/sand/mud and very hard to do it tactically - e.g. while scanning the trees etc. I live out in the country and I used to commute to work by walking through fields for two miles and it's surprisingly, because you have to keep looking at your feet. I have a renewed respect for soldiers who have to do it whilst paying attention to the surrounding area.

In my opinion the game would benefit from greatly reduced mobility on mud, sand etc, so that fields become a death-trap; currently you can run at light-speed across the map, but even in the mod you were unrealistically athletic. I like the idea of a cross-country trip being a major undertaking, it would encourage the players to cluster in the cities and simultaneously reward the few players who try to explore the countryside.

It really depends on how much snow there is to know if you can run in it. Chenarus doesn't seem like the place with 2ft of snow on the ground in the winter, but I could be wrong. A light dusting you can run in fine, however it would be louder than normal running. Also, the fields are farming fields with grass on them, absorbing rain water. Since the fields are not bare, you could run on them just fine. Also, sand is easy to run on if its not quicksand/underwater.

Well, "run around" was more meant in terms of being outside in falling snow. Sure, if you have snow / sleet / ice on the ground, that would make it difficult to run.

I think it would be awesome if they could implement it that walking outside when it's snowing is gonna make you more cold than actually wet. In RL it's quite hard getting "soaked" by snow, provided you wear the right clothing.
