Finding somewhere called home

Recommended Posts

I just need me a little homestead. Nothing fancy, just somewhere to brew up some sweet, sweet Mountain Dew of my own. Ahhh it's been so long.

Basically I don't see them as bases because any grown man with a pickaxe will get through any wooden constructed barricade in mins.....give him a sledgehammer and he would just come through the wall. Slowing down zeds and survivors yes, building a long lasting base.....not feasible if they hold authenticity of how easy it would be to get in.

They may even go that way, of very easy to get past them. I hope they do.....should be like tents in the mod (and I really hope we get those back). Major advantage to have one, but can all be lost in minuets :)

I posted something about this earlier.

If you wanted to move large objects about then it would be a team effort to load them into a car or carry them. Building a fence? So much easier if one person holds it in place whilst you dig it in...

I mean, some "realism" has to be suspended. Just a small picket fence requires a small wheelbarrow (at best) to transport, or a multitude of trips collecting one board at a time. An individual HESCO bastion wouldn't be much different (nevermind that there are a variety of sizes in HESCOs). Six slots in a pack sounds about right. We've yet to see how they're going to handle really big items in DayZ.

Send out the call, bro.

I don't want big barricades (like HESCOs) to be added until their impact on the game is thoroughly thought through. People would start hacking and boarding off whole towns/areas of DayZ so new players couldn't get any loot.

Instead I would like to see a simple system. Users can craft 1 unique lock after gathering various lock parts. Multiple keys could be crafted to open the same lock but every player is only allowed to create one lock per server. This is entirely unrealistic but, in my mind, it seems the only way to keep people from making a bunch of locks and shutting down whole towns. Locks should only be as strong as their condition. Once locks are "Ruined" they are useless and the door can be opened. Lockpicks could be used to degrade the quality of locks by "using" them on the locks. Pliers and screwdrivers would also work but it would take much longer to degrade quality.

Basic barricading could be implemented so you could board up every door on a house and have just one entrance point. Eventually I would like the ability to crawl in windows but that, obviously, can wait until barricading is added. Traps and like spiked barricades could be added after that to keep out zombies (they would get stuck on the spikes and in the traps).

But no HESCOs please until their game impact is thought out thoroughly.

I have no issue with groups shutting down whole towns. It shouldn't be easy. But it should be possible.

Imagine walking along a quiet woodland road, you see a small village in the distance. You keep following the road until you come to an unmanned barricade with skulls on pikes and a sign saying "KEEP OUT." Well, you're a big boy and this is DayZ, so you go in anyway. You scout out the village only to find a clan doing clan things (storing loot, building vehicles, jerking off, sitting by campfires, taking screenshots, menacing other players, etc.) You wait until nightfall, sneak in through their perimeter, and do whatever you want to do (i.e. steal, kill them, release prisoners, etc.)

Again, so long as items (like HESCOs) have suitable counters (like being able to be destroyed/climbed/vaulted) I see no reason why they shouldn't be implemented. Moreover, if they are suitably rare, difficult to set up, and resource-intensive, that further justifies the advantage in being able to block of certain areas.

I know this thread is a little older now, but has anyone changed their mind about where their base will be now that hunting and fishing have been implemented?

I was thinking Tulga would be great, lots of game grazing spots with that cute deer stand inbetween the two parts, it's got a water pump and you'd rarely ever run out of food. There's Toolsheds if you need pliers, hammers etc. - I thought it was awesome.

Downside is it's a bit far from Kamy for my taste, I'd like to be closer in case I need to go shopping for a new pair of pants. Also, medical supplies will be rare, same with guns (which I have not carried in over two months now, it's way more fun axing down a deer or a boar. And you can look like an idiot as long as it's a rarely visited spot :-)

Then again, Kamenka sounds awesome too...

How about you guys? Still going for that quiet, peaceful hut in the middle of nowhere?

Nooooooope.

But i probably should.

Then fill it with shotguns and magnums until i finally find enough pistol mags to make having one worth while. Magnum and shotgun FTW.

Have you tried the shotgun in the new experimental? Taking me two shots to the chest to take down a zombie. Full length barrel from 3ft away. Shouldn't matter if I'm using bird shot, it would blow a hole through a zombie.

I like to roll around the north parts of the map, so maybe I'll find something there.
