Bandits

So I told some friends about my recent experience in Dayz. 
(I went through this life as friendly as possible, handgun in my pants and axe in my bag. no rifle no visible weapons.)
And it worked out. Though I got held up twice.

The first time I was threatened, had a couple things taken, and sent on my way. 
The second time was strange, rather than getting threatened I was politely asked to give them all of my food. And again I was sent on my way.

My life ended when I went into Balota after a small break in search for Ammunition for my Amphibia. I walked up the stairs of the jail house to find a fully kitted player laying prone at the top of the steps with an M4 aimed at me. I was dead before I even heard the shots.

The reason I explained all this is it made me think. 
Both accounts I was Robbed of my gear, but only the final one was I murdered for no reason. 
So my question is: What/Who do you consider a "Bandit"?

I'm curious as to what people say.

Ummm thats a tough one. Iv said in a prevouis thread that there are many types of bandits {or players really} like the other day i was watching 2 'bandits' take some guy hostage and steal his blood. They were literally doing it in the middle of the road...so i asked myself are the organized bandits or just plai silly doing it in the middle of the road. In the end i took them both out and help the little fella out with food and some stuff.

 

To be honest the guy who was waiting at the top of the stares {in my eyes} is not a bandit...he didnt hold you up...he camped it out...he then killed you ad then probably waited for the next poor soul to turn up and do the exact same thing...dont worry about it to much tho buudy ;)

Personally though, I'd much rather be Held up, Robbed and (hopefully) Be let go than be shot before I even know what happened.

I kinda respect those guys Who hold people up rather than KOS, it seems like even though they are still just stealing from other players, they're creative and they actually think about what they're doing. I also respect guys like you who help players :) 

And I've been KOS'd plenty of times, I'm not upset about it, just a little disappointed.

Sad story to hear, fuckin' campers are the worse.

If you want to be safe, protip- Circle the outside of the building, slowly and silently. Check every window even slower. After this, do the same to the ACT. Push into the ACT, and gain an angle where you can see into the prison from a more elevated height.

I can see the point your making to buddy and thankyou for the nice comment, I dont mind bandits going around holding people up as it shows that they do have some sort of team work when taking someone hostage.....but I will stay with what i said that if some one camps one spot thy are not a bandit. :) hopefully see you in the game sometime :)

You actually got held up? I've never been held up. I always just get executed, cold blood. I've had friends get held up when the Bandits weren't aware I was around. But never actually gotten held up myself.

 

Anyway, a bandit is someone who will rob you or hurt you. Break your legs, handcuff you, take your shit. Or hold you at gunpoint and make you drop your stuff. It takes some skill. But someone who will kill you without thinking twice is a murderer.

I think the term bandit should be abandoned this state of the game - or maybe only used as a verb, not a noun. It just brings too much 'good guy/bad guy' thought process to the game in general. The great thing about the apocalypse is the graying of moral boundaries - not defining them.

Regardless, campers are the worst....

Beans. Bandit and Hero need to be discarded.

 

Just because I give a guy a can of beans or bandage him when he is bleeding, doesn't mean I won't break another guys kneecaps later to save my own skin.

I'd rather be shot, just my opinion.  Also, if you take my stuff I'll do what I can to kill you.  I won't rob you I'll simply shoot you when I see you again.  I've said it before I don't play the game to be your fun I play it to have my own fun.  I don't mind being shot, I don't mind someone trying to hold me up (won't ever happen mind you because one of us is going to shoot the other) I don't mind someone camping and killing me when I open a door.  Thing is that's all reasonable in a zombie apocalypse every one of them things could and would happen in that situation so I can't fault someone for doing any of them things I just act accordingly. 

 

As I have stated before, I have only been held up on 3pp servers.  In all the time I have played on Hardcore servers I have never been held up.  I figure the reason is you can't look over fences and around corners on hardcore so you can't say "drop your gun" and still be safe on hardcore servers.  If you can see me I can see you.  This is also why I'd never surrender on a 3pp server (or a HC one, but that never happens) because my experience is most guys (not all mind you, I've been shot doing this..) don't have a shot when they say they do.  They are around a corner or behind a fence or such.  If you simply run tactically away most can't shoot at you.  This is also why I figure most "robbers" (avoiding the bandit term) are cowards and only do it when they can rob you from around a corner or behind a fence or do it when they outnumber you.  There is no skill in robbing someone when your 3:1 over them or are hiding using 3pp to see them.

All three are bandits.  The first two are professional bandit-survivors.  The last is something else...perhaps.

 

I have no problem with the first two and when I take on the role of bandit I prefer to play that way myself and only shoot on site if the opponent has done something to deserve it (shooting at me for no reason, shooting at fresh spawns, etc.)  However, if I get caught inside a building (essentially trapped) sometimes it's just best to shoot first and ask questions later.  This is particularly tempting at high-traffic, high-KOS death zones like Balota and the NEAF.  Even in this case I like to give a warning rather than just KOS, but that's me.  

 

Unfortunately, we don't know the circumstances which placed Mr. KOS Bandity-Guy in at the top of those steps.  Maybe you caught him there and he felt trapped and decided to shoot first and ask questions later.  Or, perhaps, he was just camping the those steps for nooby loot/kills.  Could be either one really.  I've met plenty of reasonable players and I've meet complete azzhatz who camp the spawn points on the East Coast Road just to take pot shots at fresh spawns.  It takes all kinds I guess...

These were the first and only two times I've ever been held up. I've always wanted to be but never have until now. I was actually really excited strangely enough.

I never announce myself when im at a disadvantage... Its like with wolves... You disturb a wolf while he is eating, hell attack you... Disturb a lone wolf while he is looting... And hell attack too. Everyone is just a survivor; I agree having "teams" is not what a sandbox game is about. And like I say all the time ... If you're limiting yourself to 1 play style 24/7 you're missing out on 3/4 of the game. They didn't add the ability to poison people for Hero's.

 

 

I used to play BF3 just like that video I'd just sneak around behind the enemy and fuck with the sniper-camp-fags. Usually while using recon kit myself ... like it's supposed to be used for because it's [Recon] not [Camping Sniper Scrub].
