hells high 676 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) In the Rezzed presentation today, Dean announced that they plan to model dexterity into the game and frankly it excites me; I've never seen it done this way and its been an idea I've had in my own head for projects for a while. People think of mouse acceleration and automatically start hissing and retreating to safety. But in reality the system that we currently see in DayZ is a broken negative acceleration system. I'm not sure why it turned out the way it did but it certainly isn't right. The dexterity system that Dean is talking about is, in my opinion, a very interesting use of the technology. Basically what it would do is simulate weight with your weapon, so spinning around with a 9 pound, 50 inch long Mosin Nagant isn't going to be as quick as a shorter, lighter M4. The current (again, broken) system acts in such a way that the faster you turn your mouse, the less you move. I do not think this is the way the dexterity system will work, but rather will only add a cap to your movement speed based on your weight/weapon. This sounds much more appealing to me than a simple, arcade shooter-esque 1 to 1 system. You may actually have to consider what weapon you are carrying, where a threat could come from, and how to position yourself in a way to negate your potential disadvantage. Yes you'll have to think! Brilliant! That means clearing a building with a large rifle would be substantially less viable than, say, with a pistol; and running along with your Mosin hoping to be able to snap 90 degrees and shoot the guy smartly traveling on higher ground would be in vain. One area I'm curious about is acceleration of movement and momentum. You may only be able to swing that massive chunk of wood and steel around so fast, but will it take time to start moving at that speed and will it continue its path after stopping for a small duration from the momentum? Can you lower the weapon, bringing it closer to your center of motion to spin faster? These are all very exciting possibilities to make the game feel more satisfying in terms of movement and weapons handling. I'm expecting a bunch of "ew mouse acceleration", but I'd like to hear some intelligent counterpoints or even expansions onto why you think this could be awesome or awful. Cheers! PhillyT 554 Posted March 29, 2014 I'll believe Dean can produce a new form of successful mouse acceleration when I see it.
gibonez 3633 Posted March 29, 2014 Sounds like a good move. Any move towards realism gets a thumbs up from me. This would also move to "balance" lmgs who some people feel are overpowered.

pacific_coast 632 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) yeah, just watched the stream. glad he said he is straight-up copying skyrim's approach to both bows and crossbows and hunting. the "dexterity" system is a realism-type aspect that i HOPED dayz would utilize. we may end up with a hardcore that is almost as realistic as ACE mod. that restores my faith in this game... a little bit.
