irl-calibre 744 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) "Breaker... breaker.. on the side. do you copy 87.8"??? I have yet to talk to a random person on a walkie talkie, I think part of the reason for this is people forget to turn them on, but the damn things eat so much batteries, you kinda need to turn them off and on, it would be kinda cool if they used way less battery power & you could just leave them on. They are only of use really if some random joins the group and isn't in which ever 3rd party voice coms being used. Also I think pristine ones should cover the entire map, with damaged 5km badly damaged around 1k. with the quality deteriorating depending on the condition of the radio. does anyone really use them? irl-calibre 744 Posted March 28, 2014 maybe a good start would be not to view them as something to possess? & then get a CB!

irl-calibre 744 Posted March 28, 2014 Take them to the radio towers. yeah I could see that, I was being very generous in the range of a pristine handset, but more so just to get people using them..
odin_lowe 3686 Posted March 29, 2014 I always carry a spare walkie-talkie on me if I encounter someone who wants to team up, and role play a little at the same time. It's one of the things I like that adds so much to immersion. Like you said, I too wish that the batteries would last longer for those.

pacific_coast 632 Posted March 29, 2014 i have a walkie. i figured since it's just inventory and can't be held it doesn't work yet. if i have it on to a frequency... does that mean i hear the open comm mic talk of other players with the same channel open? this has never been properly explained or incentive given to use these

It has an approximate range of 1000m or so. Further, you loose signal. Instead of Direct Chat, you select the frequency you chose on the walkie itself, and press the same key you bound to talk. Players in your proximity will be able to hear you too, but further than 50 meters, only other players with a walkie-talkie tuned to the same frequency and turned on will be able to hear you. Someone used it as a numbers station at Green Mountain on a certain server a while ago... Very entertaining and immersive stuff. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/168707-the-ccsd-chernarian-creepy-stuff-department-needs-investigators-for-the-radio-transmission-mystery/?hl=%20number%20%20station Edited March 29, 2014 by Odin Lowe
strongtent 74 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) I was having a discussion with my brother and explaining to him how I can see in the future walkie-talkies *could* become much more valuable, and hopefully more wide spread; once loot is fixed. I don't think I will bother with third party programs ever again, because the game will have everything I need to communicate properly and have the best experience in my opinion. gibonez 3633 Posted March 29, 2014 They are useless as long as teamspeak and mumble are around. All rocket has to do is disable push to talk and make it whenever you make noise on your mic it automatically talks in direct chat. So your teamspeak and mumble conversations are mirrored in game.
pacific_coast 632 Posted March 29, 2014 this may explain how i can hear people's open comm chatter as if they were right next to me, even though i am in the middle of a field. somebody forgot their walkie was on, and so did i.
irl-calibre 744 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) their far from useless as you can communicate further than your group chat with randomness, it's not like there is a shortage of them, I find them all the time in fire stations.. As it is, they need some buffs if they're to be widely adopted. Wider range, less drain, and so on. That said, they're an extremely cool concept. They just happen to be playing second (or perhaps 5th or 6th) fiddle to VOIP clients.

Absolutely the in game radios if incorporated correctly would have been a great addition. Imagine once base building is in you build a radio station just ouside of the cherno radio tower and broadcast over the radio what you see and hear. An impromptu radio station .
pacific_coast 632 Posted March 29, 2014 how about radio beacons? signal gets stronger the closer you get to it the beacon is dynamic and has rare loot, just like the heli crash sites in the mod. i liked that dynamic area/event aspect.
Katana67 2907 Posted March 29, 2014 Remember, way back, when they were selecting player-run radio stations for the game? Remember when walkie talkies were supposed to be persistent objects? And they were supposed to pick up proximity audio? Remember when players were supposed to limp if shot in the leg? And so on? Whatever happened to all of that? I suspect development happened... And yes, walkie talkies are utterly useless with third-party VOIP programs being the norm. Even direct chat is undercut by things like TS. Another thing that needs to be addressed eventually.
pacific_coast 632 Posted March 29, 2014 i hope we get a proper hardcore mode. where the client detects 3rd party VOIP and broadcasts your location in flashing green and red arrows for breaking the immersion.

gibonez 3633 Posted March 29, 2014 This should never happen. Ever. Worst idea. How is that a bad idea ? If you are talking in your mic you should be talking in game. Why should you be able to communicate with friends in game talking tactics while remaining silent in game.
Facetentacles 92 Posted March 29, 2014 I'm over 300 hours on the game now and I've only found approx. 2 walkie talkies, and I search a lot of different areas for things. Where do you even find these things?
