Tricksy zombies

Recommended Posts

There's a couple of zombie-related ideas floating around, so I decided to add my own.

Zombies are nasty, half-dead people who's only goal is to beat people to death and then calmly walk away.

But being half-dead I bet they sure get tired, but darn it, they want to beat people up so badly.

So I propose three things. Firstly, zombies should lie in wait. They should lie in the road as though dead. In other cases they should be sitting around and doing other idle things. It's not like they'll always want to be standing around, is it? When you approach them they attack if they detect you.

Secondly, zombie corpses shouldn't despawn.

Thirdly, zombies shouldn't respawn unless the loot in their town respawns. I use zombies as a measure of how much loot there's likely to be. If I don't see any zombies then I assume that the place has been cleared. If I see loads of zombies then there's a good chance that there might be a fresh apple in one of those buildings.

You enter a town full of zombies. You see a couple of dead zombies and a couple of open doors, and so you assume somebody's been here. You go further into the town looking for somewhere that hasn't been looted when one of the zombies, previously thought to be dead, leaps up at you.

Zombies will become more of a threat, as even zombies thought to be dead can thump you one. You'll be able to survey towns more accurately. No more seeing that there are no zombies and deciding whether it's because somebody killed them all or because they just aren't there. Now you'll see the corpses (or the sneaky ones who are pretending to be corpses) and can conclude that somebody has probably beaten you to the punch.

You are only right depending on what movie you base zombies on.

Original zombie is a dead person reanimated, they do not get tired and do not want to beat you, they want to eat you.

Zombies do not think, therefore they can not "lie in wait" most would just wander aimlessly, as they already do in dayz. Some would just stand there, as they do in dayz. I agree on zombies just lying there, Infestation has this but it isn't much of use as you can tell easily who they are, unless they are in the tall grass, where they become very effective, and it's something dayz might have come to the end of completion.

Dayz zombies are based on Walking Dead zombies, not 28 days later, so don't ask for speedy zombies. Not based on Resident Evil so don't ask for super zombies.

No, the DayZ world perpetually repeats the time period shortly after the apocalypse- the same Day Z over and over, groundhog-day style. If we made zombie corpses not despawn, there would be huge piles of corpses everywhere which are added to every time the zombies respawn, and the servers would all crash.

The real answer is to increase zombie despawn time to about ten minutes to half an hour, but only when the game can handle it [not any time soon].

I'd actually say DayZ zombies are in no way based on Walking Dead zombies and are instead 28 days later zombies. The 28 days later zombies are speedy, as DayZ zombies have been incarnated since the mod. Walking Dead zombies are pathetically slow.

Having slow zombies around, as we see in The Walking Dead, makes other people the real threat rather than zombies. Having speedy zombies, like in 28 days, makes the zombies the threat, which is as it should be.

Im finding these new zombies, not harder to kill but just annoying, they are running circles around me, i cant connect with an axe. Its still easy enough to run away. And their super vision is pissing me off.

They're not 'lying in wait' in the predatory sense. They're doing it because they've got nothing else to do. If they're just infected people they'll still get tired. Why would they stand around for days on end? It makes the world more immersive. Hell, in 28 Days Later which is what these zombies seem to be most similar to, that's exactly what they do in the church scene. What's his name walks into a room full of dead people, calls out and a couple of them get up.

That goes without saying. Optimisation is important, but it isn't my concern.

It's definitely the devs' concern.

Precisely my point.

Precisely my point.

And my point is that the devs do the work and are what you take into account first, not "your concern".
