Make sure you don't hit him too much, then all the gear he has got on him gets ruined and you cannot use it yourself.

When you scroll your mouse wheel on his body, and the 'hide body' option appears, you know he's dead and you can stop hitting him.

Normally a headshot by any weapon (without headgear on like a helmet) will kill him.

Yeh, I'm fully aware of that and it was one of the first things I told him before he picked up the game. Loot is just so common currently and it's so easy to survive that we don't care, we'd rather beat their lifeless bodies to a pulp. Lol.
