zombie anticipation

Recommended Posts

Hello, I know that the zombie behavior is not final and there will be a lot of change which I cannot fully foresee right now. I'm just thinking if it was possible to give them some anticipation ability? From the dev-videos I've seen so far it appears that only their following pattern is improved, so they get faster to your current location. But they never seem to anticipate your future position. But wouldn't it be easy for the engine to calculate your future position from your previous behavior and jump to the expected "future position" instead of your "current position"? Enemys within the Arma Engine must have tried this in order to shoot on distance, no?

This affects especially zombies who approach you from the left or right side, they seem always to follow your pattern instead of cutting your way off. The result is that - as a player - you only have to run straight foward, sometimes straight through them. It would be much improvement if they would force you to change direction instead, because they beat you within movement, because they know where you will be one or two seconds later. The most freaking moment in zombie movies is when they approach from different sides and the actor doesn't know where to head anymore. I don't see a way to achieve this without anticipation abilities though.

If they were supposed to be stupid they would run like in the mod, and slow to a walk when they entered buildings like in the mod. You have to remember these are INFECTED people, not the deceased come back to life

They are also stupid now in exp.Do you want to keep them like that?

We need highly responsive zombies,in order to make them a real threat.

He dosen't propose irational things like the infected using firearms,he's making a good point.

A dog, when chases a man, usually goes ahead of him and prepares some room to jump on him

in order to meet with his teeth.Same principle can be realated to our infected friends.Make them go

in front of the survivor and leap.In order to achieve that we need to make them run faster than the player.

Infected, fine. As long as it is with a zombie virus!

I demand Zombie apocalypse.

With classic Z.

Loads of 'em.

Capisce?

edit:

""We need highly responsive zombies,in order to make them a real threat.""

That's the shortcut they're trying to sell you.

Z's real strength lie in their numbers and unwavering determination. Not in having the same intelligence as a pack of wolves.

I'm sure there's some hentai game out there that will float your yacht.

This is the core mechanic we're talking about here.

Game-mechanic wise,slow zombies are shit.

There,i said it.Why?

Because they are not a real threat.

Having great numbers and fast zombies,is the way to go.

Do you want them to bump into walls like the classical zombies?

Theese people are infected with a diesease similar to rabbies (at least that's what i heard)

The zombies should be ferocious and never lose your tracks(pursit you to the ends of hell),like back in the mod days

when i used to go prone in order to pass safely through a village.

I agree slow Z are hard to sell.

How about a compromise; make them more sluggish in the initial detection phase and slowly build up steam.

We seem to agree on numbers and determination level

"Do you want them to bump into walls like the classical zombies?"

Yes! Have them bounce off the walls when running at it and make a hole in it and fall through if its a flimsy wall / door / window.

""like back in the mod days when i used to go prone in order to pass safely through a village.""

That's the kind of atmosphere i want.

Hmmm,that's not a bad idea.

You mean like a threat tactic system:

Lone Zombies

1-Spot survivor

2-Alert mode-Howl and scream at survivor (Taunt)

3-Observe the survivor movement(sudden moves makes them charge)

3-Charge at the survivor

Horde Zombies

1-Spot survivor

2-Make a circle around the survivor/taunt taking attack stance

3-Charge at the survivor

4-If survivor escapes, pursuing zombies form 2 groups one attacking seperatly from left/right side.

But at least,we should give them the predator mentality.

1 potential spot (based on audio / visual clues)

2 do Z moan (alert nearby Z)

3 walk towards potential spot with alerted Z to confirm (the sluggish phase)

4 confirm spot (based on higher level of clue value)

5 do Z scream. This alerts every Z in town. Now would be a good time to run. Z pursue via the shortest route if you do until point 8.

6 slowly gather speed / momentum closing in from every available side. If you're beside a town, they will come from mostly that direction. If you're in the center, likely all sides.

7 frenzy. At this point running should be pointless and Z are able to take down all but the strongest walls / doors

8 cool down. Z that lose contact for over x amount of time lose interest and start wandering about. X should be more than it takes a couple Z to wreck a wreckable hiding place.

If theYou have to remember these are INFECTED people, not the deceased come back to life

Then if that is so that they are infected people. Then answer me how is it possible that they cant starve.

Because they are couch potatoes when nobody is around.
