Why do 'heroes' think all fresh spawns are new players?

Recommended Posts

I had a very weird experience the other day with some 'Heroes'. I had just been killed and respawned on the coast. Next thing I see these two players approach me with guns, I thought I was dead but it turned out they were friendly ... too friendly.

Here's the conversation [also I found out near the end of it that my microphone wasn't working]:

Hero: Hey man do you need any food?

Me: No I'm fine.

Hero: I'll put down an open can for you. I'd give you more but I'm running out.

Me: If you're running out then keep it, I don't need it.

Hero: Remember that when you find a can you will not be able to open it unless you have a can opener or a sharp weapon.

Me: What? I know. Jeez

Hero: You can head to the town - that way - where you can find a pump to get hydrated. Just drink until it says you are full, then you should head inland. Be careful of bandits ... [advice keeps going]

Me: Why are you telling me this? I have 50 hours!

Hero: [to his friend] I think he might be a little shy.

Me: SHY?! can't you here me? ... shit my mic is broken.

Hero: Are you ok man? need anymore help?

[now at this stage I hated this guy, I knew how to play the game and what he was telling me was Day Z 101. I really didn't like his condescending tone. I wanted to type that he should piss off and try doing something else that wasn't mind numbingly stupid. But who has time for a speech?

Me [typed]: No. Thanks. Goodbye.

I ran off but decided to double back and follow them from cover to see what he did. I was also tempted to find an axe and whack the guy when he wasn't looking. What I observed was the guy stopping 3 other fresh spawns and doing the same thing.

Now, here is why this kind of behaviour just makes no sense to me. These people are NOT new players, they are just people who had died. Giving them a can of food and a lecture on how to eat and drink is not really helping. Just because they do not have a weapon or millitary clothes does not equal a new players.

The worst part is that the hero's actions were actually counter intuitive. He said that he was trying to make Day Z a better place by being friendly and helping new players. This was his attempt to stop bandits. The only problem is that he was actually doing his best to HELP bandits. You see there are two types of players in Day Z. There are PvPers and RP Survivors. The RP Survivors, by definition, survive. They keep to the countryside and try to avoid contact with other players. PvPers on the other hand do not survive, they actively seek out players and confrontation and therefore die quite a lot more than average. So the players on the coast are not new players, they are reincarnated bandits. By giving them some food you are not saving their bitter souls, you are getting them back to banditry all the faster.

TL;DR Why do heroes think fresh spawns are new players? They are actually respawned bandits and there is no point helping them.

Next time, just punch him in the head a couple times. They will instantly get the picture since, you cant really do that as a new player due to the fangly raise/lower stance design.

Problem solved.

Yeah, there are heroes, myself and clan included that do not patronize or make assumptions about players, we often encounter fresh spawns, ask them if they want/need anything and usually we are heading our separate ways within 10-20 seconds it seems. We spend most of the time in the tree line simply watching people, waiting for bandits to show up.  Never really understood the "Let me force feed you all my food and water, and shove 'help' down your throat" approach.

I think you are making a very general assumption, and you know what happens when you assume. I try to strive for the more hero type of guy, I'd rather not kill someone unless they try to kill me. However, I generally play with the mindset everyone else around me knows what they are doing more than I do, despite having 120 hours on the game.

Besides, is being helpful bad? I'd rather give a can of food and some advice to 10 bandits than let 1 actual new player have a bad experience.

Doing good can lead to more good. It's not necessarily counter intuitive.Think of it this way. Giving money to a homeless guy could lead him to use it for alcohol/drugs (banditry), or it may be a poor dude who just has run out of luck and maybe that little good deed will get him going again (encouraging kindness and friendliness)

ahh yes, well can't fault their intentions, maybe their methodology is a bit off, I tried the helping freshie's thing and it pretty much ended up the same as you described.  Except I stopped when it was clear that they would be just fine without me, the only time I really hang with freshies now is when I'm a new spawn myself in which case I'll run with a random for a while. I've given more stuff to random players that I've ran into somewhere inland.

i have encountered this aswell, its annoying because you want to kill them for making blind assumptions; but on the other hand they are only trying to help.

You hate someone and want to kill them because they are trying to help you?

I give new spawns surplus shit I'm carrying like tin openers and melee weapon because it can be very annoying respawning in a server that's been up a while and has been thoroughly looted.

I dump the stuff on the floor near them and keep my distance in case they are hyper aggressive nutters =P

I once found myself being approached by a do-gooder. He insisted on giving me food and protection, but when I said I just wanted to explore the map on my own he got annoyed and blasted me with his shotgun. I don't trust those helpful fuckers any more.

As a "hero" type player myself, I always treat fresh spawns as if they know what they're doing and have played for awhile.

Unless they start asking about the game mechanics...and even then, I keep my distance. You never know if it's someone just trying to get close enough to take you out.

I think you are a little bit to sensitive, he had good intentions.

Better a guy who is to nice than a psychopath that wants to force feed you.

Whenever I encounter a fresh spawn I just ask if they need anything.

If I get a "no" than it's fine and I'll be on my way.

They should cuff you and torture you instead.

Or if you didn't want to be helped, ran away/attack them.I don't see your problem,

maybe they indeed misunderstand you,

but still they were nice enough to offer you food.

You should consider yourself lucky it wasn't some other psycho.

Edit:Also i agree, the fresh spawns may as well be reincarnated bandits.

But if they get helped by friendlies, some percentage may change their mentality

and try to help others instead,so it's a good thing without excepition from a fresh spawned bandit to a noob survivor.

The RP survivors have nothing to do when they reach a certain point, so eventually they look for something to do. Whether that be PvP or not. You can't assume that every fresh spawn is a bandit.

Those people that were trying to help you also shouldn't assume that you're new to the game, but they're just trying to help.

I've helped fresh spawns before, but it was at their request. Two of the people I met were literally new to the game. One of them couldn't figure out how to even eat a can of beans (had to tell them about sharp objects and can openers). You learn about different things in DayZ through experience, so some people just try to make sure other people can have a good one before they end up having a terrible one (a terrible one is always bound to happen sooner or later).

I think the bad experiences can sometimes shape how someone plays for a bit. I had a few bad ones when I first started, so I wasn't even able to trust anybody for a little bit.

yeah I'm just trying to understand why you didn't just sprint off into the woods and go about your business instead of standing there like a new player... seems you were as much a part of the non-existent problem as the "heros".

Yes actually he was. And I was speaking, I didn't know he couldn't hear me.

Because I was intrigued. I rarely get to talk to people in the game.

Good point. The only thing is that a very very small percentage of people you meet on the coast will be pure newbies.

There are plenty of people who don't KOS. There are few in my experience who will try to help you out only because they assume that you are new. Plus he is feeding bandits, at least in my opinion.

hrm in your original post you make it sound as though you were pissed off at these guys - seems to me this thread just got real pointless. you wanna talk to people, go where there are people - just don't come here and complain if the conversation doesn't go the way you would like it to. surely with all of your 50 hours you have figured out that much.... just sayin.

Completely agree with OP. If you want to do the hero thing then just drop your goods on the road on the coast near a spawn and get away. The main purpose of heroes on the coast is clearing it of newspawn killers, not running around like an annoying mother-in-law pestering them with constant offers of food and drink.

Well i do apologize for trying to feed you.. I was wearing a orange raincoat, orange mountain backpack, and had an m4 in my hands blaze on my back.. my buddy also had an m4 and an sks i believe..

We run down the coast and be nice to people, since we feel they might be frustrated and angry from getting killed on sight, we dont want them to turn into KOS people, so we try to be the first face they see, a friendly one.

ehh yes i think remember you and actually i thought you were looking for the chat button all that time.. hence my overly detailed explanations...

edit: Wazza-something I believe? some kind of name with a W in it. I actually didn't mind after a while it was the initial meeting that annoyed me!

There is a "purpose" in a sandbox game? Where do I find the list of rules and objectives for this game. <pulls out popcorn and refreshes>. :)
