so i dont know what the max "hunger" gage is 

 

and we always spawn hungry...

Your hunger has to go from yellow to orange, and then orange to red before you start actually starving. I'm not sure on how long it actually takes, but I've had friends run from the southeast corner of the map to the northwest airstrip without eating anything and their hunger was still only orange.

The first things to do upon spawning are find an axe, eat lots of food, drink lots of water.
