Accidental shootings

Recommended Posts

I was reading the topic "I haven't slept in 2 days" (which I am quite sure is a bit of harmless trolling) but it made me think about the flight or flight reaction which is inevitable when you unexpectedly encounter another person in Dayz.

this happened to me a few days back while showing my nephews dayz (they where watching me play)

so I'm wondering around town looting and trying to avoid zombies, I thought I had zombie agro while I was in this house, so I was looking out the window (which seemed to be where the sound was coming from) and all the sudden I hear something to my left.

now I'm at the end of the hall and the only exit is back where I heard the sound, I spin and to my shock it's not a zombie but a "survivor" with a gun pointed right at me....

I didn't have a mic, and since I thought there was a zombie near by I had my axe drawn (I did not have a gun).

well seeing this guy with a gun up and aimed at me there was a lot going through my mind, but in that moment instinct took over and I bolted. so now I'm running  right at a guy with a gun, axe drawn.

naturally he shoots, luckily it didn't kill me out right but only made me bleed and knocked me unconscious. now my first reaction was shock and was wondering "why did he shoot me" which was the same sentiment my nephews expressed. but as soon as my brain started working I considered what must have been going through HIS mind, what would I (or anyone) have done, he couldn't have known what I was thinking what was going on in my mind or determine what my intentions was, all he could do is act based on what he saw.

which was a man running at him with a AXE.

the final twist here is that after I considered his motives I thought  "hmmm maybe he isn't a heartless killer and only trying to survive just like me".

at this point laying on the ground bleeding out I had 2 choices, 1 respawn and start over or 2 try to make contact and hope he helps me (or at lest doesn't kill me). so I typed in chat and told him I wasn't trying to kill him and ask if he could help me.

to my shock I woke up only a few seconds later, now I'm not sure if he had a hand in that (as he never spoke) but there he was, gun drawn but not shooting... I thanked him several times bandaged my self (this time making sure I didn't draw a weapon or look like a threat) and as soon as I gathered my self I said goodbye and ran off.

I know there is a lot of KOS and bandits in Dayz but I really think part of this is not because people want to kill each other but because they are afraid.

please share your own stories either of those you killed because you were afraid (only to later think they may not have been as big of a threat as you thought) or of times you have been killed or at lest shot at that you look back and think  "I totally brought that on myself"

Sometimes I'll go through towns calling out.

It's gotten me into a few firefights, but it's also saved a few lives. Accidentally running into another player stirs that fight or flight and so naturally, in tight quarters and having someone accidentally invade your space like that...the first instinct is to defend yourself.

I met a few decent dudes the other day by calling out in a town. They'd respond and after a bit of back and forth, we're trading and making runs together.

It's a dangerous tactic no doubt, but I've used it to good effect in many cases.

Cool to hear that your nephews got to see some kindness in the game. Good stuff!

yeah if I have a mic I try to make contact ( most the time) some cases I just get the heck out of Dodge

yes these kind of encounters are what makes this game so interesting to me, oh and to be clear my nephews are in there teens. I just built one a PC and was showing him the game (he plays with me some now). I'm not sure I'd show very young kids this game, as it is a bit harsh at times.
