server respawn time

its a bit annoying its that long because i wanted to play a game on the experimental server but my gamma wasn't making things brighter for night and you don't start with a torch so i wanted to switch to a day server and now i cant. looks like i will play a diff game .

It's lag more than likely.  Just do something else for 5 mins and join a server that's currently daytime, or another night server and hope that you get your light.  I've had this happen more than once on stable where when I first opened my inventory to put my battery in my light I had neither.  Was bright enough with the moon so I just started scavenging, opened my inventory again to check something on the ground's condition and I had my flashlight and battery.

It's crazy, I know, but you may have to adapt and overcome. Otherwise, you're going to have a hard time.
