trust me.

 

made about a 15fps difference for me setting view render distance

 

also, you can enter in ram, vram and cpu cores/threads into the steam launch line to get better results.

 

the Arma 2 profile in your gpu can be turned on as an easy optimization.

 

Messing with my .cfg produced less than desireable results. The typical tweaks that get thrown around here don't really do anything but reduce certain in-game settings to very low, even if they don't show in the menu. e.g. Normal for object detail is 500,000 and half these random tweaks call for something closer to a fifth of that, it's performance increase at the cost of making the game look like Operation Flashpoint.

 

 

I have screenshots of my settings on the top of page 2.  Those are while I'm in Electro.

 

What sort of server load? I tried your settings again on an almost completely dead server and got similar results, yet while I was running around on a full server dodging gunfire it was 15fps.

AO off, vsync off. edge smoothing off/very low.

texture detail and filering to high only!

 

shadows and clouds should be no higher than normal.

 

try those tweaks. very little difference in quality but your fps should break 60 easily.

Yeah 15fps for me, horrendous.

Edit: I just went on an empty server and got much better FPS, almost double. More like what Caboose was getting but slightly less (580 probably).

 

Looks like we just got to the bottom of the FPS issues. Server side? >:(

What sort of server load? I tried your settings again on an almost completely dead server and got similar results, yet while I was running around on a full server dodging gunfire it was 15fps.

 

I didn't pay attention to the server load as I was just picking random servers.  I didn't want to use my main, which is on hardcore.  I usually play on a server called Balota Book Exchange and has around 30+ players at all times that i've been on.

true, my game looks more like A2 than A3 and comes very shy from cabooses screenies.

but i break 60 fps until a building loads!

 

also my cfg had my view distance at a range from 1200-1600 or 2400 and by setting it to 1200 only I got a much smoother experience overall.

but i see your point. the cfg can always be deleted and re-patched through steam without affecting character stats as well incase that is an issue to anyone. also you can set and switch between different .cfg files until you have one that works best.

My usual settings are 2560x1440 with vsync off, texture settings on high, all the main settings on normal, AA on normal with ATOC on all trees and grass, AO off, edge smoothing off, HDR low, and all post processing and motion blur off. With these settings I tend to get 18-23 FPS in certain towns (especially Vybor and Stary) but 60-70 FPS in the countryside.

 

I did a lot of experimenting last night and tonight, changing every setting (including lowering the resolution) doesn't seem to do anything in those towns. The only setting that really helps at all is turning object detail down to very low. A friend of mine with a very different system replicated the same behaviour.

 

We usually play on servers with 50% capacity or more in terms of players, and we also prefer experimental servers in general.

AO is not your friend! turn that off in your GPU so it can never be activated!

Oh, I also play at 1920x1080.  Your resolution is what's causing you fps issues, I guarantee it

texture detail can bog you down in the cities.

alpha to coverage makes the scenery pretty, but turn it off.

all that extra foliage to render, as you zoom in over a city into a forest to scan the treeline and pow! fps drop!

 

also props to balota book exchange it has good ping since im west coast NA

i also play no higher than 1080

the textures can support 2k, but the optimzation isnt there yet i dont think.

my render resolution is oftern lowered to 88% if it's very bad during a session

Also guys, I just went back on my main character in Vybor where I get the most lag, even on an empty server it was still 18 FPS with object detail up and 26 FPS max with object detail on very low. No other settings seem to be affecting it again, nor does the server capacity as this one was literally 0/50 when I jumped on.

 

Edit: And just to sew more confusion I was still using my GTX 580. These are the specific, absolutely exact framerates I got on my GTX 760 last night.

 

Can't explain this at all. All I can say is that whatever the circumstances do cause this slow-down, even if you claim you never see below 30 FPS, Rocket's tweet shows it's a known issue.

Can't explain this at all. All I can say is that whatever the circumstances do cause this slow-down, even if you claim you never see below 30 FPS, Rocket's tweet shows it's a known issue.

Oh I understand it's a known issue but too many people are spouting off that it's effecting everyone and I called BS on it.  Also, I take very good care of my PC and the majority of people who own one don't have a clue on what they are doing with theirs.  I've seen people's computers running so many crap processes it's a wonder how they can even play anything at all.

I build them for profit and take care of my own as well, I don't think this is machine-specific at all unless an i7 is some magic bullet. Which in gaming, we both know it is not, and doing a 20% overclock didn't adjust my framerate even by 1 and this has been confirmed by some very well-known posters around here such as Hetstaine.

 

Even doing this tonight on my machine alone, I have seen 15 FPS on one test and 30 FPS on another for seemingly no reason in Elektro. I thought it was because of the empty server but my last test in Vybor threw this out of the window. I simply have no idea, hopefully Rocket's tweet indicates that they do and hopefully it will be fixed soon because it honestly keeps me from playing as much as I'd like to.

hmm, domina. i don't know what the issue is with vybor. i'll take my HC char up there he's north of balota right now i think and ill try it out

 

we have rigs of varying builds and specs and this issue is common

 

hope it is a loading issue and not a texture issue, or worse.

 

also im looking forward to the touted nvida optimizations, i wonder what that will entail.

I didn't OC just for DayZ.  I've been OC'd for quite some time now. I may just lower my system to test this myself

Lies.  My 3 week old PC tears through cities like it ain't no thing... on maximum settings (1920x1080).  Sure it dips lower than when not in a city, but it's still 40+ FPS, and I'm always running ShadowPlay.  There is a problem (was evident on old PC), but to say even the best rigs have issues is ignorant.

 

So your argument that your system doesn't suffer optimisation problems with FPS is to point out that you suffer optimisation problems with FPS in certain places?

Good work fella.

 

You can argue all you want but even the lad that posted images from his machine that had 3 x 780's (yes you read that right, three 780's) suffered problems with optimisation. It's a "badly" optimised engine, I really don't know why you wish to debate that.

oh yeah setting my vram to 1 gig (i have 1gb gtx 650 ti) instead of auto helped if i remember correctly

something about dayz not using all the vram it can/load sharing between ram and vram for different game elements

It would really help if you did, it's my #1 most annoying spot alongside Stary. If it helps this is also the location and direction I used for testing:

It's like the only setting that makes a difference to me there is object detail, very low it's 26 FPS and very high it's 18 FPS. I even tried practically maxing the game out with similar results, my maximum FPS around the countryside was really the only thing affected (from 60-70 FPS down to 30-40 FPS).

Yeah this is one I try too, on my 760 I make sure I set it to 2GB instead of auto. I have also tried using the startup switches via Steam to manually set all the appropriate memory and CPU optimisations but, when it comes to Vybor/Stary/Cherno and others it doesn't seem to have an effect for me.

some people play their dayz.exe in compatibility with win xp sp2/3 for (slight) optimization.

Of course this game isn't optimized.  Any normal person knows that the majority of Alphas are never optimized.  He could have ran 20 780's and still wouldn't have gotten anything because this Alpha isn't designed for SLi/Crossfire yet.

if i had to guess, i'd say dayz is loading a lot of those flat open textures since vybor has no elevation around it or forests or water to "viewfog" out 60% of the distance rendering.

 

maybe vybor's buildings are clashing with the farmland/fields/grass textures since it is a rural town and the team has not optimized texture load transitions between urban and rural?

maybe the big cities and not town have been optimized?

 

the mystery continues! will our daring heroes figure out what's causing fps drop in vybor?

My reply was in context with an earlier exchange. Personally as the game as it is I don't really go chasing FPS. I'm at a fairly healthy 30+ no matter where I am in the map and that's on a 8320/7770 system running at 1600x900 albeit with most of the rendering stuff turned off. When the game gets closer to beta and the gun battles really come down to single digit FPS/ping differentials then I'll start tweaking everything, but as it is now the Alpha is just a bit too flaky to  go around desperately chasing the best configs. Life is too short.. ;)

It is affecting everyone, with your specs you should never dip below 60fps, to what degree it affects people is debatable but the fact poor or no optimization impacts everyone is not debatable.

 

I picked up the game a bit ago and am using a converted htpc with a crappy ATI 6570 in a dell SFF with a 235 watt power supply. I get near your FPS out of towns. and I get the same crappy 10-20 fps in towns as people with rigs much much better than mine. Moral of the story is don't go buying top of the line hardware to play this game just yet and if you already have top of the line hardware its going to matter much less than it would in most other games.
