who else is excited about the recent tweet from rocket?

Recommended Posts

Dean Hall @rocket2guns 5h

Discovered what could be one of the major causes of FPS slowdowns on client in cities. Will report on progress later #DayZDaily

cause i sure am.  nice to hear some optimization is happening this early!

Where is it written that they are currently tweaking it?

All Dean made clear was the issue,he didn't say anything about fixing it or not.

Edit:Sorry my bad, didn't see the other tweet:

Good news.

It's not like the client side couldn't do with a "bit of pep", but it'll get swallowed back up by further additions to the game. Essentially it's like money, you spend pretty much what you have, you earn more you spend more.

I think the bottom line is that RV and DayZ will never be particularly well optimised. It would need to have been built from scratch in order to accomplish that.

But Rocket has said in his livestreams that there is bags of room for optimisation, both server and client-side, based on feedback from hardware companies. Also, thankfully, this issue is very situational so hopefully any optimisations here won't be eaten up any more than the general performance of the game by adding more players/zombies/loot etc.

I don't have this issue so meh.

Many people do, any many that claim they don't seem to exaggerate a little.

I don't use or like Twitter.  Does that make me a bad person?

I wouldn't follow Dean anyway.  He frustrates me.  Heck, I can't even tell what he is saying in that tweet!

Would be nice if it's an addressable issue and not inherent. If it is "fixable" and can free up some fps for server and client that's awesome, and gives some more room for further implementations and features.

Oh, you do. Everyone does. Even the best rigs have issues with FPS in relation to other games. To claim you don't is actually claiming you are playing a different game.

That's a bit of a "how long is a bit of string" issue. We've seen that a lot of stuff being shifted over to the server, primarily for security as well as synching reasons, means that optimisation is definitely needed for that and I know there was talk of shifting certain tasks over to being core specific, and we all know that the SA client is still considerably slower than the combination of Arma/mod. I think the problem is a diminishing set of returns. I'm sure the devs will keep on chipping away to get it to a reasonable level. A lot of that will be taken up by new stuff being added though, and with the bottlenecking being shifted up the architecture to the server there will be a limit to where it's actually worth the time/money/effort to optimise the client further.

Bottom line? I agree with you, it's not like I am arguing, I just wonder if by the end of it all we'll have a particularly optimised game in comparison to other titles.

I don't tweet either, but then you don't need to considering everything important will get thrown onto this forum anyway.. ;)

I have Facebook, but I just don't get why Twitter is even a thing.  And hash tags drive me bonkers!  I sometimes wonder if I should maybe do something.  I think I made a Twitter account once.

Don't worry, I'm not arguing either. I just always seem like I am.

Edit: Due to certain circumstances I just happen to have both a GTX 580 1.5GB and a GTX 760 2GB [comparison] on hand, so I did some testing in Vybor which is one of my main problem areas when it comes to urban FPS.

With the same settings* and in the same location I got identical framerates on both, around 22-23 FPS. CPU utilisation didn't top 70% with my 2500k at stock, I have previously tested CPU utilisation at 4GHz with similar results. The only video option that affects my framerate whatsoever in this scenario as object detail, I had it set to very low and turning it up to max took my FPS down to ~18, no other video option in the game seems to affect my framerate in Vybor no matter how high or low. Outside of Vybor settings actually seem to have an effect and I can get anywhere between 35fps almost maxed out or 70fps with a bunch of stuff on normal.

A friend of mine has reported similar results on an R9 270 but using a completely different (older, AMD) CPU setup. Almost the same performance with some slight differences, and seemingly no affect from changing most graphics settings.

*2560x1440 with verything maxed except object detail on very low, no SSAO and no post-processing, antialiasing on high and trees+grass filter on.

interesting. I just recently bought an R9 270X OC and now I don't dip below 30 fps in cities at all. Out in the open I'm at 50 fps. I'll post a screen shot of my settings when I get home. Also specs are in my signature.

Post your settings because Franky your claims don't add up. I would expect to see higher FPS than 50 in open areas on that system, I know I do on a MSI R9 270 gaming.

Also, you're either mistaken or being misleading. You do dip below 30 fps in cities. Everyone does. Regardless of specs.

If I use all minimum settings and force 720p resolution I get a slight boost, we're talking mid-30s here. It seems I'm doomed to 18-23 FPS in certain towns.

It does also seem to be certain towns, not all of them. Vybor is one of the worst, as are Zeleno and Cherno, I have had mixed results in Pustoshka.

Lol. If I had FPS slowdown in the big cities I would have to turn on FPS monitoring (which I'm not sure how to do) to even be able to tell. I've never once seen FPS drops (excluding that bad update that they pushed a bit ago, right before this hotfix, that was pretty bad).

I'm not calling you a pleb, but there are plebs out there who simply don't notice and think "20 FPS is fine I don't even notice, the human eye can't even see more than 24 FPS". Like I said, I am not calling you one of these plebs, but maybe you just don't notice?

I'll call him one though. I don't know how anyone can tolerate the frame drops in this game, let alone not noticing them.

Lies.  My 3 week old PC tears through cities like it ain't no thing... on maximum settings (1920x1080).  Sure it dips lower than when not in a city, but it's still 40+ FPS, and I'm always running ShadowPlay.  There is a problem (was evident on old PC), but to say even the best rigs have issues is ignorant.

Nah, I would think I would notice. Perhaps there's an imperceptable drop (like 1-2fps)? I'm running it off an SSD, 16GB of RAM, i7 (not overclocked) and twin GTX 650 in SLI. Again, if there's an FPS monitoring option, like a command line switch then I could know for certain, otherwise it's just smoke and mirrors and so on.

So when I get 18-23 FPS in Vybor, and my friends with very different rigs also get 18-23 FPS in Vybor, and when Rocket has acknowledged this issue exists and is being working on, are we all imagining it? I even overclocked my i5 to 4GHz just for the people who claim it's CPU limitation, and it didn't affect my framerate whatsoever.

As far as I'm aware SLi doesn't even work properly in DayZ, and it definitely doesn't use anywhere near 16GB of RAM. If this is correct then, apart from your loli7 which is not really any better for gaming, you're running less grunt than I am.

It's the truth, people with more powerful systems than yours are reporting FPS in the mid 20s every single day.  But no, lets believe your unfounded and unsubstantiated "claims" instead.

Probably not, the other card appears to idle. but that's besides the point. I think the big pool of RAM is what's preventing the issue.

EDIT: It's also facinating that people will insist I have issues I don't have. "but but but, everyone has this problem" "Well I don't" "LIAR! FUCKING LIAR, YOU LIE BECAUSE THE GAME IS BROKEN FOR ME WHAAAAAA!"

It isn't because DayZ is a pure 32-bit application. Not only will it not use over 4GB RAM, it's taking your VRAM in to account too.

On paper, because we're taking your SLi out of the equation, you're running this game with less grunt than I am.

I posted on the second page.  It's the top post with screenies.
