i find all kinds of stuff going house to house except food i find weapons to defend my self but die of starvation. does the amount of people on the server amount to how much food is in the server. What advice would you give about finding food

get away from the coast and go north

Specific houses and places drop more food than others. There's only several dozen house types in the game, most single story ones are bugged currently and don't drop loot. Keep searching until you are able to recgonize houses with good loot, and entire cities that are ripe with loot. This is where expierence comes in. Learn from your successes and failures and you will succeed.

Suspect you've just got unlucky really. My advice for looting food is to head away from the spawn areas. Get a map like http://www.izurvive.com/ and head inland. Most houses will spawn food of some sort but look particularly for red brick houses with blue windows and yellow wooden houses with blue windows and blue diamonds. The later is the best food spawn in the game.
