Play audio when nearby player Aborts to lobby

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see (or should I say hear?) some sort of audio clip played in 3d space at the location of a player that aborts out to the lobby screen.

The main goal of this feature is to help inform players when that guy around the corner pops out of your server to go run behind you and blast you in the back from another server.

I'd like to consider the log in and log out audio cues to be 2 separate ideas in this thread.

//------------------------------

I had contemplated whether playing an audio cue when a player logs in, but I feel that is too much free information for players in the vicinity. The only time I could see a use for the audio cue when a player comes back into the server is if you could do a check for somebody reconnecting to the server in a short period of time. Say 5 minutes.

If a player is logging in for the first time that night to play, no audio cue will give them away.

If a player logs out, runs around in another server, then comes back in to blast you in the back, a nice ping of some sort should announce their ass-hatery.

If they wait more than 5 minutes before coming back in, you'll likely have moved on and its not really an issue and they can come back in quietly.

It would have to be tweaked to ensure no more information is given to other player than is strictly necessary, but I like this idea.

What if there was a way for a server to tell if you logged off, then back in within 5 minutes, but were not in the same location.

If I log off, then log into the same server and am in the same spot then nothing happens.

If I log off, then log into the same server and have moved to an area other than a respawn point, I am frozen for two minutes.

It could show that hourglass symbol.

I'm not thrilled with the idea of a hard coded penalty like that.

This is meant as additional information for those paying attention so they can make informed decisions.

this whole relog-between-servers-and-change-position thing is a pretty serious topic.

a friend just got shot in the back after defending my dead corpse, cause some friend of the other killed guy logged to another server, run into the house behind our position, relogged and shot him.

this audio signal could be a first step into the right direction to solve this problem.

a waiting queue of maybe 10 minutes before you can relog to the SAME server you played before could be a good addition to prevent at least instant relogging.

Queues and penalties for getting back into a server aren't the way to go. Yes, the trans-dimensional teleportation warfare can be annoying, but don't go so drastic right off the bat.

Stick with the audio cues in here for now.

An example of why knocking out players or putting long delays on relogging is a bad idea:

(Hypothetical)I've got a base camp set up on NY1 and NY2 around a castle. Rather than keeping all of our eggs in one basket due to servers going down/being full we have stuff on a few different servers we enjoy.

I'm restocking on ammo while I'm on NY2, but I've run out. I relog to NY1 and grab a few magazines after moving a couple feet to another tent. Then I log back to NY2 to meet up with the group and continue playing.

With your proposed penalties I'd be knocked out or locked out for extended periods of time.

With an audio cue you get warning of shenanigans and can take measures to prevent it.

Players that disconnect in combat should instantly die.

There is no excuse for logging off whilst in a firefight, or when you have been shot.

The audio cue is nice though, for those who D/C and try to reconnect to shoot you I guess.

The idea is to make it very, very dangerous to do so. People will do so anyways, but this should reduce the effectiveness greatly.

One thought to add to this, rather than a single ping a continuous sound for a few seconds will allow people to determine direction/distance as they look around. I don't think a single ping will be enough barring a warning that somebody nearby came in and maybe a general direction.

The other issue is when the play the sound during the loading process, how long to play it and what happens if/when load times for getting in become very short/fast.

i'm pretty sure we will have a proper reconnect/save system, the way the spawn and server hopping is know is completely not fairplay. If the sound alert could be implemented asap while a proper respawn system is implemented then i aprove as a temporary feature.

possibly a good idea' date=' not sure how easy it will be for rocket to do though

Playing an audio cue on login shouldn't be an issue. The actual checks for reconnects can be done server side so the master server doesn't have to take a hit.

how about the sound effects? the soundtrack that plays, theres like 2 or 3 short musical/industrial files played. do they have any tie to whats happening in the game? maybe if someone spawns near you, a random (or selected) one of those files could be played - it would give justification to the added atmosphere

One issue with the soundtrack vs long audio bits is that the position of the audio source doesn't seem to update as it plays, only when the new sound starts up. I noticed this the most with the bells in cherno. Whether that's something specific to my system or more prevalent I don't know. But a nice distinct sound that you can't mistake for something else is definitely a plus.

I like the idea of an audio warning when you log in or out, i'd be tempted to take it one step further and have the sound when you log in, audible by infected too, should make players think twice about where they disconect.
